Can anyone recommend an "antiques" dealer in the Leeds area?

My step-father died recently, as a result I'm now the owner of my later-mother's "china cabinet". This was my grandmothers and supplied to her by her best friend who ran an antiques shop in Keighley that's long-gone. Essentially this is all I know about it, there are no labels or anything on it, it's just a wood thing with glass sides and glass in the doors. It could be from the 1970s, it could be 1870s, I have no idea, it could probably do with a restoration though.

It's a sentimental piece and probably holds more value this side that financial but it's not something that fits with my decor and I have no desire to store it so I can then force it on my 5 year old daughter when I pass away just to keep it in the family. It was always that "don't touch" piece of furniture as I grew up.

Anyway, enough of my story, I just want someone trustworthy to come look at it (or look at photos I can take) and then make me a fair offer, take it away and ensure it goes on to a good home somewhere. I'd put it on an online auction but I don't think I can do it justice and "wooden thing with glass bits and shelves" probably won't attract much of a bidding war.

The market for antique furniture is a shadow of what it once was and to be honest a cabinet from the 1970's could well be worth more than something from the 1870's as its all about what's in fashion and what people want in their houses.

Retro stuff from the 50's, 60's and 70's is cool.....heavy, dark wood Victorian and Edwardian furniture is not.

If you post up a picture of the cabinet I'm sure you'll be given a good idea of it's age etc but ultimately an Antique Auction house will probably be your best option.

There is one or two in Harrogate and York....not sure about Leeds.

Thanks for the reply, what you say makes a lot of sense.

I'll take some photos at the weekend and share them, it's a fairly dull piece of furniture but may well bring some joy to someone one day. As long as it doesn't end up at the tip my conscience will be fairly clear and I hopefully won't be haunted into insanity.

For the north side of Leeds there's Hartleys in Ilkley.

for Auctions there are a few, Gary Don on york road, Halfway auctions in shipley and elite auctions near wakefield.most offer a collection service too.
