A lot depends on budget.

If >250k or £800 a month renting then Heworth, Stockton Lane, Holgate. Personally I lived in Osbaldwick and Burnholme. Both nice but very student now.

Village wise, Haxby, Wiggington, Dunnington, Fulford.

Further a field Wheldrake, Escrick, Stillingfleet. Naburn is nice but near a Water treatment works so smells of down wind.

Personally I live in Riccall. 30 commute to centre of York and a very good bus service if you want to have a meal/drinks in town. Loads of amenities as well.

Also York isn’t like other big Yorkshire cities. There are very few rough areas and even those aren’t bad compared to big cities.

Avoid...IMO

Bell Farm
Clifton (Burdyke, Kingsway and surrounding)
Tang Hall (Etty Avenue and Alcuin Avenue)
Foxwood (Bellwood Avenue and surrounding areas)

This is a good summary. However I live in Naburn and have never smelt the water treatment, you cannot smell it beyond the marina.

Never you mind

Bishop Thorpe road is pretty decent, some good places to eat and a lovely little pub called the Angel on the Green. It's a bit hipster round there and you do get drunk Geordies staggering around on race days.

If you want to live a little more rural but still close to York then Acaster Malbis is very nice and has a decent pub though it is by the river which does flood.

Yeah, I was going to say that, I've been to Naburn many times and never smelt the treatment works other than when driving or boating directly past. It's a lovely little village too (and has a pub!).

Aren't the roads around the village usually flooded several times a year when the river tops its banks?

Happy to give you an honest opinion and let you know if there are undesirable things in a specific street to the best of my knowledge. I see more of York than most due to my job.

Best of luck finding much aside from bungalows in the Stockton lane area that are less than £250k or £800 per month rent. 3 bed semis aren’t much less than £310k or £1100 per month.

Heworth v nice in the village - tennis club, deli, coffee shops in walking distance.
Bishopthorpe road nice but overly expensive and trendy.
Holgate v nice
Shipton road nice near rugby club/tennis club

We're looking at a nice house in Carr Lane, about a hundred yards or so from the Acomb Road junction. Nice area?

I know there will be a lot of traffic ther but being a Londoner, I'm used to that. Is it a spot where yoof congregates and drives scooters, or pukes on your front garden after a few beers and a curry, or a hotbed of radicalism of any sort is what I want to know?

It’s a busy road but you have seen that, Ainsty is a busy pub as well. It’s not the best round the back off Carr lane but certainly not the worst. Can’t answer about youths but I highly doubt there are any hot beds of radicalism. Personally I wouldn’t live that side of York but that’s personal preference.

We've seen a brilliant house at the southern end of Carr Lane, almost at the York Road junction. 4 beds, off street parking, nice garden and sensibly priced - no doubt because of the area, which seems Ok, mostly owner occupied, well maintaned and not too bad at all. Offer going in tomorrow.

We looked at Bishopthorpe Road houses - too small, overpriced, no parking, hipster neighbours, noisy - and couldn't be doing with it.

We looked at Stockton Lane houses - OK size but overpriced, again all a bit old and a bit small really.

We looked at a nice house in Melbourne Street but, again, too old and quirky and too expensive.

We reckon that after six in the evening we could drive to Bootham in around ten minutes and, if push came to shove, get a cab or walk back - mrs rlw doesn't drink anyway.

It's not Peckham or Camberwell or Lewisham or Tottenham so it ain't that bad at all.

My girlfriend and I moved to Fulford in York in November from a nice part of Camberwell, SE5. Work in the city was no longer needed so a reduction in rent was well appreciated. After 6 months here now, we have dedided to put down some roots and had an offer accepted on this property in Haxby.

Any immediate concerns from this wonderful gang of Northerner's?

Aside from the lack of garage, there is a half garage in the garden which is more of a bike-shed and store room.

Great spot Haxby, and a lovely house, congratulations. Everything you could want from a large village IMO.
