Traveling up to Pickering on Thursday to collect a car.

We'll be going along the A64 from the A1 to Malton around lunchtime.

Can anyone recommend a good caravan cafe along that stretch ?

Firstly, I don't know of any specific layby cafe's - they may be there, but I don't travel during their presumed hours.

What I would say, though, is that you're straight past York and you could get to Monks Cross/Vanguard retail parks without going into York proper and be on your way quickly. No greasy spoons that I know of are easily accessible in York itself (and I wouldn't waste time going in).

Greggs for cheap eats - other options are available.

Hopefully someone will be along shortly to give you the information you really want!

Good luck with the trip and the car.

There's usually one or two, but many are closed this time of year. (You may be lucky)

Personally I would just nip into Malton, plenty of cafe's there.

From Malton to Pickering about ten minutes.

If you have time have a look at Matthewsons in nearby Thornton le Dale.

Thanks for that - we definitely plan to drop in at Mathewsons - great fans of the programme.

They are where we might be in 30 years time - buying & selling rather than spannering - if we live that long.

Thomsons fish and chips cafe/takeaway on your left on the A64 a couple of miles past York is excellent.

There's the Highwayman Cafe on the A64 on the Malton side of York. Takeaway or sit inside, it can be a bit pricey from memory though

Or just pile off into Malton? Loads of free, 2 hrs parking market square or on the right just after the Talbot Hotel and loads of choice as regards coffee places, cafes etc

If it's just a roadside type caravan / cafe you're after, TK snacks on the industrial estate just as you come in to Malton is pretty decent. You can also pay your respects to Specialist Cars of Malton too as it's just around the corner from there.

Turn off the A64 at Malton.
Follow the road till you pass the BMW garage on your left.
Once you have passed the mini garage on the left (it's next door to BMW) keep your eyes peeled for Ian Brown tyres on the right hand side.
Drive past the junction that Ian Brown is on.
Take the next right.
The caravan will be halfway down that road on your left hand side.

Arw you collecting the car with a trailer? If you are you might want to avoid the centre of Malton as parking isnt always great during the day and you may struggle to find somewhere in the centre to park with your trailer.

Thanks people.

The Highwayman did the job.

We did have a trailer so their big car park was handy.

We also dropped into Mathewsons and had a little walk round and had a chat with Derek.

Apparently the whole village is HEAVING on auction days.

Glad you got sorted. Strangely although we've lived on the outskirts of York for 32 years I've never been in the Highwayman. Probably because I imagine it being full of holidaymakers stopping on the way to the coast, which is realistically mainly going to be at weekends. Must give it a try!

Glad to help, was the cafe OK?

Re: Matthewsons, I took my father-in-law to the last auction on 8th Feb, as we both love the TV show. We came in the back road about 9.30 and the town was gridlock, public car park was full, all side streets were nose to tail traffic, and the main road back towards Pickering had cars dumped on both sides of the road for about a mile. Eventually got parked down a dirt track, but could not get inside the auction house (village hall) but that was only for the memorabilia sale. The vehicle auction was held later in the Museum itself but we didn't stay.

I wouldn't go again on auction day unless there was something I was wanting to bid on in person
