Can anyone recommend some lovely roads near York? Hoping to give the XJR a proper send-off before it turns into a BMW 6-Series sometime this summer.

I sometimes do a route Easingwold, Sheriff Hutton, Castle Howard, Amotherby, Kirkbymoorside. Then back via Helmsley, Ampleforth, Coxwold. Most of the roads around that area are quiet and usually farm traffic. I try to hit them early though, especially this time of year.

Depends how far you want to go. A166 through Stamford Br. to Fridaythorpe and then peel off onto the 1257 is a firm favourite. You can either peel off onto the 1249 up through Foxholes and Staxton to the 64 or carry on to Brid and either go north or south from there. The 171 from Scarborough to Whitby is a good shout then you could come back down the 169 to Pickering which is also a good shout. Or you could continue past Whitby on the 171 to Stokesley then down the 1257 to Helmsley, Sproxton, Slingsby and cut down through Castle Howard to the 64.

Blakey Ridge road from the A171 down to the A170 is a decent road too (through Castleon, Hutton-le-Hole).

The 64 is riddled with mobile speed traps, especially early mornings on the weekend days.

The runs above need to be done before 7am (first light would be better) otherwise you'll get held up by too much traffic.

That!

Take your pic of anything in white really

B1363 North then Hutton Le Hole, Castleton, turn round, go back past Rosedale, keep going to Malton and out the other side then again take your pick all the way back south toward Stamford Bridge and home.

Or go out towards the coast as above.

Honestly, get a map out. Pick the white ones. Village to Village. Keep going till you run out of fuel. Theres miles and miles and miles of great road.

Another vote for most of those that have been mentioned! Stokesley to Helmsley is great and well suited for the larger saloon (although a known camera site....).

If you go up to Helmsley from York, that's better in a car than on the bike too - and when you've got as far as Stokesley head East to Castleton then back over Blakey Ridge (watch out for sheep).

You can then head up to Whitby, but the road to Great Barugh is a lot of fun and takes you to Malton, where I can't recommend the Buttercrambe road highly enough (although watch the width restriction and the surfacing in places).

Enjoy!

I've got rellies in Sheriff Hutton and Fryton, anything round there and Castle Howard is great. Just avoid the A64, it seems to be one long traffic jam every time we get on it.

There was a camera van on top of Blakey Ridge t'other week. I was with my wife in the boring car going to the Lion for lunch so wasn't sweating. Saw more than one driver pull into the pub car park looking like they know they have incoming points frown

Include Helmsley and lunch at the Pheasant.

Nice walk on Sutton Bank for an hour past the gliding centre.

Be careful on the A19 (speed traps)

Not that is unfortunate... That was a favourite go to and I'd never previously seen a camera on it. Thanks for the tip off, not just the sheep then.

Thought I'd chip in to say that a lot of the back roads around the York area heading out east have very recently been resurfaced with loose chippings.

Roads around Stockton on the Forest, Warthill, Sand Hutton, Stamford Bridge, Buttercrambe, lots along the length of the Buttercrambe to Norton road (great road usually btw), also North Grimston towards Fimber and probably quite a few more I didn't come across when out yesterday or over the last few days. They seem to be on with quite a few areas at present.

Will need some time for the loose chippings to clear and did go round one or two corners to be greeted by a sweeper just pulled up static right after the bends ffs!
