I personally can see a huge spike in serious RTAs on all the back roads around the A9 as soon as the cameras go live. The 40mph trains will be bypassed by people hammering it down the unsuitable roads at unsuitable speeds. Im willing to bet that the scamera vans quickly relocate from the likes of Daviot to places like the back road from Carrbridge to Aviemore

I thought the plan to put cameras on the A9 south of Perth had been dropped, this suggests otherwise
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-is... Anyone know what the true story is?

We need some geeks to come up with an Average Speed app for smartphones and satnav units. It knows where the specs units are, it knows your speed, and displays what speed you need to be going at to comply with the speed limit before you pass the next set of cameras.

Anyone?

You could just reset your OBC (if you have one of course) between cameras to check your average speed is < 60

I have a TomTom and as long as it knows there is an average speed camera set up it gives you your average speed in the bottom left corner so there are devices out there already that can do this.

They are thinking of blocking some right turns on the A9 as well.

As pointed out some farmers have land both side of the A9, blocking off right turns will result in slow moving farm traffic making longer detours up one side and down the side to get to their farms, plus trucks limited to 50 mph, really wont help.

Also increasing trucks from 40 to 50 will reault in further cars have to travel at 60 to pass them. Glad I dont have to use that road.

Road Angel Gem does this too as does a camera app I have on my phone. Allows you to make some pretty rapid progress.... biggrin

Just bought a season pass for the ski season. Looks like I will have to leave even earlier now. Just got to be prepared with music, coffee, munchies and let the cruise control do the work.

I drove from Perth to Inverness today and they had signs saying the system goes live on 28 October.

The sectors are long. I assume the prosecution threshold is going to be 68mph at least (for motor cars, anyway). It's pretty tricky to average that speed over most of the sectors, unless you're travelling in the small hours. So I think the risk of prosecution is pretty small. It is also not clear whether the sectors will be active all the time. They're using SPECS3 with something called a Portable Outstation Device, which suggests they have to wheel out some piece of kit to whatever location they are interested in before they can do anything.

My concern is that it will lead to bunching and tailgating and that safe overtaking will become less viable in many places where it is perfectly safe at the moment.

I await the first camera poll getting an angle grinder taken to it sometime on the 29th

going to cause nothing but stress and frustration on a road that already taxes a lot of drivers

So do these work by taking a image of just the front number plate?

All average speed cameras do, but they now have cameras to take pics of bikes rear plates as they dont have front, whether or not they are on this stretch I dont know.

Someone will know, maybe time for a set of Bonds revolving plates smile

I see that calls to cover the rest of the trunk road network with average speed cameras have already started.

Environmental group WWF Scotland has called for average speed camera schemes to be introduced on more of the country's roads and motorways "to help save lives and cut pollution".

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-is...

Now, that is just one pressure group with a green agenda, and there are installation costs to consider, but if the A9 scheme is deemed a success I fear we could see the proliferation of average speed cameras across Scotland.

According to The Courier

Average speed cameras on one of Scotland's most notorious roads will be switched on today as part of a plan to improve safety and save lives.

Construction work on the new system for the A9 between Perth and Inverness began in May and it is now set to become operational.

In addition, a higher speed limit for HGVs on the route will also come into force today, with a view to reducing driver frustration caused by slow vehicles on the busy road.

The increase from 40mph to 50mph is being trialled under a pilot project.

Which will making passing HGV's a bit more challengeing then.

Passing the HGV itself is the easy part. The difficult bit is getting past the 30 or 40 closely spaced cars following the HGV. And none of those 30 or 40 cars will go anywhere near 60 mph, because they don't want points for speeding, except of course on the dual carriageway sections where they're all in the outside lane doing 65!

And relax...
