The increase to 50mph will be great at say 11pm on a Sunday night or any other times when the traffic is light but that's it... as soon as the volume of traffic increases, things grind to a halt again and I agree it' simply because it's far to 'busy' around the approaches and by that I mean there's slip roads too close to the bridge and they're the issue... some spokesman said last night on Forth FM, they ask drivers to use all the slip roads and join at 50mph. Really? When is that ever going to happen at peak times! I'd agree on the approaches too, the corner on the M9 extension just before Dakota gets quite tight at 70mph... and to echo the comments about the northbound approach, I think a biker came off earlier this week just adjacent to the Park n Ride.

Just seems poorly thought out all round... however, I did Dunfermline to the airport and back at 5pm last week and went through Inverkeithing and joined and whilst it was a little bit slow on approach, once on the bridge the traffic flowed fine and on the return it was clear right up to Dakota then moved fairly well. Perhaps just lucky timing but I was expecting it to be worse. Main issue seems to be anything that thwarts that steady flow and it's game over and that could be anything from an accident or people dawdling on the slip roads.

Are the average speed cameras still going to be in place?

No real difference I'm afraid. Still congestion where the traffic merges just before you cross the bridge. The slip road starts from a traffic-light controlled junction which means a whole batch of cars at once trying to get on to the bridge.

Doesn't help when the vast majority want to join as soon as possible rather than using the extra length of the slip to get up to a reasonable speed. And that is a problem regardless of the amount of traffic on the bridge.

It's a triumph of poor planning.

About the only thing that might work is putting the Inverkeithing slip traffic over the old bridge.

Joining on at Ferrytoll at 15mph around 6:15 this morning.

That hill is steep and everyone looses momentum on the approach.

Thank fk I'am not commuting into Edinburgh anymore, it was a nightmare before the new bridge opened and now each morning I see the traffic backed up past Rosyth as I turn off the motorway...poor bds I feel for you.

Spotted some new traffic lights being fitted at the top of the Ferrytoll sliproad.

Wonder if they're going to start drip feeding traffic on at peak times hehe

Drove over it twice last weekend for the first time.

There's not that much of a view in the day time.

And, at night, the lights on the barriers must really annoy trick drivers. Just really surprised that the towers aren't illuminated...

No surprise there.

There wasn't a chance the expansion joints on the Southbound side were safe for 70mph. Hitting them at 40mph that was already obvious and should have been dealt with before the bridge opened.

I never thought the expansion joints southbound were particularly bad.

Northbound, north-side in the outside lane is a different matter - at 50 in the mini it was quite an unpleasant experience!! i think they have had one attempt at fixing it already when it shut for the walk - it was really bad the first couple of days, and then was much better on the re-opening.

isnt there something doing the rounds about the windshield things also falling out?

There was something on the news about some of the wind barriers coming loose.

Transport Scotland were quoted on the news this afternoon saying the southbound diversion across the Forth Road Bridge will add 2-4 minutes onto journey times. I think they missed a zero off those estimated times mad

They're going nuts in the comments on the Scotsman (as per usual, then...) about this.

The Scotsman is reporting months of delays, but there doesn't seem to be a source...

Always an SNP bashing fest in Scotsman articles. They could cure all cancers and they'd still try and make them out as the bad guys...even as someone who is critical of all parties it's getting tedious.

Ah, come now. The hilarity of the comments is all that makes the Scotsman worth reading these days. After all, all they have are two or three journalist-derived stories, with the rest (such as their entire business section) being regurgitated press releases... It's a terrible shame. The Scotsman used to be good.
