Looks like we did pull over and park up in a passing place yet when you see a car in a ditch and someone stranded you do what comes natural. Luckily for all this passing place was very generous in size, our cars caused no obstruction or delays to other road users, in fact it took us about 10 mins to get the car out/up and running and in all that time not a single car drove past.

you are blessed to live in such a beautiful country, we visited Isle of Skye, Isle of Mull, Apple Cross and Oban in May just gone but couldn’t resist calling up again. We may visit your country again this October lol

Thank you. Great trip. Last day today and we are in Torridon. Off to Applecross and Plockton today. Roads should be interesting as Applecross 1:5!! Head off home via Inversness tomorrow am. In all will have driven about 1300 miles!

Scum - ruining it for everyone, was a supporter of the NC500 as I thought it would bring some much needed investment and employment opportunities into the area. Sadly the net result has been a plague of idiots.

Don't give the general public the benefit of the doubt, they'll only disappoint.

Closing most of the toilets like they are doing isn't going to help. Must admit that when we did it it wasn't bad everything was very clean but you wouldn't ca ch me camping or in a motorhome

Absolutely agree on the public toilet side of things....very short sighted given the influx of cars / tourist buses etc...but I’ve certainly seen a big increase in the amount of roadside litter along the north coast this year in particular.

How are they 'scum' or a 'plague of idiots'?

According to the article....

quote said:
According to Murdo MacPherson, secretary of Kinlochbervie Community Council, there has been an increase in the number of motorhome users spending the night in laybys, by the side of roads and in car parks, particularly at beauty spots.

Rubbish bins are overflowing, there are not enough public loos to cope with demand and some visitors are even using open spaces as a toilet.

..... He said: "It's disgusting. When I went down to the car park last week the bins were overflowing and there was used nappies, dog poo and glass everywhere. I was so revolted I picked it all up myself and put it in my trailer for disposal."
Sounds like the Scottish government or Highland Council were happy promoting the NC500 but did nothing to prepare (or want to spend any money) before the tourists came, and are now complaining that tourists are bringing entirely predictable problems. You cant spend millions promoting an area of the world and then complain that there are more camper-vans, people want to use the toilet, and that the bins need emptying more often!

As I agreed with in my last post a lack of public toilets / active closing of public toilets by highland council is completely short sighted. However, chucking bags of rubbish into the sea, bin bags dumped in passing places and subsequent bursting by gulls and sheep broken bottles on the beaches around campfire spots are all indications of idiotic behaviour.

I think toilets and rubbish is a bit of a straw man. The real issue is road capacity. If you are in a 10 car train, keeping your litter safe, and blasting down a single track road without any concession to ongoing traffic, is not a free pass to complain.

Is there any data on officially advised capacity for these single track roads? Or on how money is generated? How are NC500 profits spent? Other than boosing hotel and BNB owners revenues, is there actually any profits to reinvest?

Id be curious know any details about NC500 ltd, if anyone has any goss?

Look on Companies House

Last year the company made a loss of £76k, it employs 6 staff, and gets funding from private investors (eg Aston Martin, The North Highland Initiative etc). I suspect because its supported by the council its not there to generate profit, but the council generate money by cash being spend in local shops which otherwise be spent elsewhere.
