I'm looking at buying a flat in town this summer and was curious about how the whole parking permit thing works for residents. The flats I've seen so far don't have off street parking so I'd need to park on the street. Am I correct in thinking that every household can have at least one parking permit?

I don't want to buy a flat then find out that I am not illegible for a permit and end up in a right mess.

You need to apply for a permit via the council. However you need to present your V5 which you'll need to change to your new address. Once you have done this the it can take a couple of weeks to process the application.

So by the time you have changed your V5 and got the permit you're talking a month.

I know of a car park you can use for free behind Mitchell library if that's any use?

Careful, not all properties are eligible for a parking permit. Iirc they need to have been built or converted for housing before 1999. There is more info on the GCC website.

My old flat in York Street, right in the city centre was not eligible.

Edit: There USED to be info on the website but it's been revamped and is now utter ste and there's no info at all about the requirements for an eligible property.

It's generally possible to rent spaces from folk too. Sometimes flat owners have an allocated space but don't use it so they rent it out.

Flat I'm looking at is in the opposite direction near the merchant city so is a bit of a trek for parking. Checking on the website it states this

"ELIGIBLE RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY An eligible residential property is a dwelling house built or
converted, for residential use prior to 1st January 2000. GCC records will be checked to confirm this
criterion has been met. However, where this check is inconclusive, the applicant will be required to
provide documentary evidence in support of their application (title deeds) "

The flat was built after 2000 so wouldn't get a permit.

Can someone PM me details for that place as well? I have a very serious issue atm, as I went and bought a car thinking I can get a permit, only to discover that I am not allowed one. I live in Charing Cross (Beresford), and the nearest free space that the council recommended I can park my new car for free is near Byres road...

Thus until I find a permanent parking space to rent, any such information would be vital! Thank you

Hi All,

I have just moved to Glasgow in the last 3 weeks, (Berkeley Street, literally just around the corner from the Mitchell Library) I was not aware of the parking permit restrictions.

I too have found myself refused a parking permit, as the property was converted back to residential after 2000.
I am a home based worker, so my car is sat outside all day & costing me an absolute fortune!
I have tried to contact the council, to see if there is anything I can do, but they are not exactly being forthcoming with any advice.

Are any of you aware of any loop holes to get around this, or even if there is a way for me to pay an extra fee?

If you could share this free car park with me, you would be an absolute life saver!!

Thanks
Helen

Hi Helen - I have virtually an identical issue to yours (live at Berkeley St, rejected a permit).

Would you (or anyone) be able to provide any further direction/guidance on this? Appreciate a lot of time has passed since this post was made,

Any help would be much appreciated !

Hey I know I’m late to the party but if you see this could you tell me a bit about this car park? Recently moved into the old Charing Cross mansions building and looking for somewhere to park

It is a nightmare. I lived central, and had to take a season ticket in NCP and Q park.
