alloy wheel refurb Glasgow (EK). Price?

Hi guys

I'm about to get my Mondeo 9-spokes powdercoated and wondering if I'll be in for a shock when it comes to the price as it's been a few years since I got a set done.

I usually use ESP (near Possil) but have noticed there's a franchise one in EK https://www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk/ but from what I can see it's about £200 a set.

Before I go phoning round has anyone had their wheels done recently for a reasonable price?

Jamie Rooney at gorbals tyre centre is getting good feedback circa £150 a set

Although my personal preference is wheel pro Scotland in swinton in the east end of Glasgow last set of 18s I had done came in st £200

Thanks for that guys. Looks like I could've saved some but I was determined to drop them somewhere on Saturday so took them to ESP Coatings (Stronend St Possil) after checking with the Wheel Specialist franchise in EK.

Basically the EK one wanted 55 per wheel (£220) plus VAT which took it up to £264. They weren't open till Monday so I headed into Town. I'd called ESP and he also said £220.

When I got there I asked him if they also added VAT and he explained they used to but aren't now VAT registered so they don't need to.

Guy says he'll prob do them on Wednesday so I may be able to collect them Saturday.

Also £10 on each wheel was for removing/re-fitting/valve/balance, as I took them with tyres on. So if you took bare 16s it would only be £180

Well I got the wheels back today and they look great. Quite hard to get decent pics of the finish, due to the brilliant weather we're having.

As the guy anticipated one of my wheels shows a bit pitting. This is because it was a lot more corroded than the other 3.

I don't mind tho as I had 8 wheels. My original 4 which were all pretty corroded and 4 2nd hand ones which were in better nick but one had a dented rim so I gave the powdercoaters 3 of the new set and 1 original.

Powdercoating is just the baking on of paint, but its still just paint. Its not a permanent solution to rough looking wheels. Maybe last about three years or so.

Do alloy wheel refurbers sort cracked alloys? Instead of just welding them?

Or are cracked alloys always gubbed in the end?

I want a set of 20 inch for my Vito camper but dont wanna pay through the nose

Hear good things about a place in Port Glasgow, Near that fancy garage thats got an add on the telly

yes that's correct. the coating can't hide deep pitting hence my inclusion of the fact that one wheel was more corroded than the others and therefore didn't turn out as smooth. As expected.

I've had powdercoating done for 20 years or so and in my experience it'll last a lot longer than 3 years, on alloys. However on steel wheels (or any steel) there can be problems where the rim & centre meet as it's hard to get that are clean enough when blasting and/or get sufficient coating on it. Have had steels done before where there was almost no powder coat on the recessed part.

If they were sorting a crack in the casting it would need to be by some sort of welding process to maintain the strength of the wheel. I guess there comes a pint where the crack can be to deep/big to safely repair a wheel and the next option is to get a second-hand one the same

I had alloys a few years ago. One was cracked and I got it welded. After a few months it started leaking again. Due to my driving and the state of the roads probably...

I see a lot of 20 inch merc wheels for sale but always one is needing welded. Just dont wanna buy it and find its useless

Wont be doing many miles on them. Maybe 2000 a year so if Im careful I could get away with it

If you need alloy welding give me a shout or send me a picture of damage and will give you and a idea if it can be repaired.

I make custom alloy car parts also intercooler pipe work so set up to do this kind of work.

Hi there you really seem to know what you talking about I have a buckled alloy wheel and have been reading all sorts of stories that they are never the same after a repair in your opinion should just buy a replacement. Thanks in advance
