I've got a week off with my girlfriend in the middle of September and we are off to Cockermouth for five days. Purely because it's a funny name!

We need some ideas of things to do whilst there. Ideally fairly cheap as it's a bit of a budget trip due to saving for a house.

I will of course make the most of being around the Lake District and some of the roads! But I think my girlfriend would get bored of me just driving...

Thanks smile

I haven't been there for about 10 years, but since you haven't had a reply yet, you could take a tour round the Jennings brewery there which is on the river Derwent, a few minutes walk from the main street, not only interesting but you can buy selection cases of their beers, IIRC with a discount from local shop prices.

No doubt someone will be along with other suggestions as there are many great places a short drive away.

Take some wellies though, Cockermouth has suffered from severe flooding quite a few times in the last decade biggrin

You're very close to the M-Sport rally team so keep an eye out for cars being shaken down.

The Lake District is beautiful though - try Coniston and Windemere.

(I lived there for nearly a year - there's a lot of scenery on your doorstep)

Not far from Gretna for your girlfriend.

Relax and walking along with driving.

I know how stressful saving for a house can be, so chill out. Try not to plan too much with sticking to a ‘budget’.

I think you mean Honister slate mine?

Jennings brewery at Cockermouth as already stated, Lakes distillery near Bassenthwaite lake, see if M-Sport are doing any tours (Dovenby just up the road from Cockermouth). Various things at Keswick. Nice harbour at Whitehaven around 12 miles away.

But if you want to save money just enjoy the scenery and do some walks - Ennerdale, Wastwater, Buttermere etc.

Do you like a walk?

Get into it. Blencathra, Skiddaw, Hellvelyn, Scafell. Then spend the last day drinking tea and eating in a Keswick cafe.

Got here! Lovely place so far smile. Downaide no real parking for the Air B&B, but can park in a shops car park after 5.30 so not a real problem.

Thanks for the ideas. Will have a look smile/

Try the Kirkstile Inn at Loweswater top pint top food lovely setting.

A walk round Buttermere is hard to beat and not too taxing either.

You weren't wrong! What a road! Not what I was expecting. I didn't google it other than to find where it was. So didn't know what to expect.

Stunning!
