It really does sadden me, all of this push for recycling, especially in Western countries, then you see this and think why are we even bothering.

Overpopulation, lack of recycling, poor planning?

Many reasons - But from the planets perspective this is quite sad.

One day they will mine this and other landfill sites for the goodies within, as recycling and refinement technologies improve.

It is tempting to think that there is no point bothering but the West lead the world in generating rubbish, why not lead the world in recycling it.

I really hope they start to put the young lad who came up with a way of effectively dissolving plastic on a pedestal, give him funding.

Certainly being researched by the big waste management companies, and I think it might be happening on a very small targetted scale (e.g. "we know that landfill is full of gold-bearing motherboards because company x used to dump there") but I don't believe it's happening quite yet on a wide scale. Very close though

Yes, I think it could be mostly for PR so far. Though it's certainly good to pilot these sorts of things.

I'm sure it's a sweeping generalisation, but I find the Chinese people's attitude to waste and consumption really quiet abhorrent.

I'll say immediately I've not been to China, but I have come across many Chinese people while in other parts of Asia and they've done nothing to sway my opinion thus far.

I've been involved in beach clean ups in National Marine parks and the majority of the waste on the beaches was from Chinese tourists which i witnessed them drop. A huge amount of plastic washed up on beaches in Asia also comes from China.

Again, sweeping generalisation but that's just the way I feel. Not sure how to educate and motivate such a huge population to change their ways.

I can see this catching up with China TBH.

Just like we had London Smog, Dounreay etc, people will get sick of living in a toxic waste dump and will force a belated and lacklustre attempt to placate them, like all politics.
