Wondering if anyone knows in Glasgow or around any good gearbox specialists who could rebuild my BMW e60 6hp19 gearbox. With a tight budget but obviously someone decent. Any suggestions, please?

Mackie Transmissions, they're ZF specialists. Nobody in Scotland will be better placed to sort yours out than they are.

Thanks for your answer mate. I have been there and unfortunately, they said it would cost over 2.5k which these days I can't really afford. I was wondering if someone could do cheaper than that by any chance? Or even look for a used gearbox and just fit in? Would that be a cheaper and better option?

Without knowing what one of those 'boxes goes for it's hard to say but it may well be a cheaper option. Do you know what's actually wrong with yours?

It showed a problem with E clutch which means it appears for 4 5 gear, driving on those gears very occasionally gearbox goes to safe mode and shuts down to neutral until I turn off and on the engine after it again drives fine like nothing.

Has it been confirmed that this means a rebuild is required? The fact that the problem goes away on the next start cycle would suggest to me that it's a software/calibration issue in the TCM, either that or a problem with the mechatronics. Neither of those should be anywhere near £2.5k to resolve, I wouldn't think.

Speak to Craig at Gilmour Engineering on Glasgow Road Cambuslang. He is used to working on some really exotic stuff, so I am sure he can help you. He’s a gent to deal with, and as honest and straightforward to deal with as it’s possible to be. Helped me out a few times.

So again, the only place I know of in Glasgow are Mackie Transmissions but they come highly recommended, if it just needed the TCU reflashed and/or mechatronics work then I doubt they'd be £2.5k for that. What exactly did you ask them to quote for?

Yes, I have been to exactly the garage you suggesting. That's what they said, requires to rebuild:// However since then I am driving my car basically every day, and literally there is no issue with the gearbox. City/motorway roads and nothing, pushing it and still, nothing drives perfectly fine and I am very confused. Can it actually be just an error showing which needs to be cleared? Idrive doesn't show anything as well.

Well if it's an occasional, intermittent issue and at all other times the car drives perfectly normally then that would seem to me much like a software or calibration issue rather than something inherently mechanical but I'm not a mechanic so I would defer to an expert. Just had a quick look on the ZF website for other service partners in Glasgow, you have a few others to choose from. Go here and enter Glasgow and see if you get on any better with any of the other agents listed in the results:
