Good garages in Edinburgh? Engine overheating- Ford Kuga 1.5

Hi Guys,

Looking for some suggestions here. Few days earlier my 2015 Ford Kuga 1.5 ecoboost gave out a 'Engine overheated. Stop safely' warning for a few seconds and after I stopped the car and restarted in few seconds, was gone. Happened on another occasion, and i just slowed down, and the temperature came back to normal.

I checked the coolant level and seemed to be very low(pic attached) and way below the Minimum mark.

I am looking for any good garage that can help diagnose the problem. Have done some reading and seems the general consensus is either a leak or engine issue. I usually get it serviced at Renault Evans Halshaw on Calder road since I bought it from them. Last service been 3 months earlier(Coolant not touched). They are good to get the car past MOT. But on this case would want to go with any trusted/recommended garage. I live in Longstone, if that matters.

I did call up Evans Halshaw and they said they can carry out a diagnostic that would cost 132 for an hour of work. Is this reasonable?

Also, with my current situation, is it wise to top up he coolant before driving? what do i top it up with? water? or get some antifreeze?

I use Colin Brown Motors in Broxburn and i’ve always found him very reasonable for repairs.

£132 an hour is about double what is expect to pay. Wrong side of town for you but two I use are Newton Garage at The Wisp,honest as the day is long, and Engine Services in Musselburgh, who have the benefit of an on site engineering team (they manufacture engine components). Either of them would sort you out and it wouldn't be more than £70 an hour for labour.

I've also recently used David Phillips Autos at Dalry (Porsche/Ferrari specialist but works on all sorts) also very good. Again much cheaper hourly rate than what you've been quoted

Erm,

If the coolant is low and yoire getting an overheat message then top up the coolant first and foremost.

Go to eurocarparts or Halfords online, stick on your reg and it will tell you what one to buy.

Then top it up. Simples.

If that fails, then get a mechanic involved.

As above fill up, go for decent drive ,check water level, if it drops you have problem. If not you have saved £££s

I live near to Newton garage. I have never used them as the entrance/exit to the garage is downright dangerous looking as the frontage is barely a car length off the busy road.

I use Edmonstone garage in Danderhall. They are honest, clean, quick and reasonably priced.

It's a 30 by that point in the road by memory? Any more dangerous than pulling out a junction onto a 30? Never given their location a second thought.
However edmonstone have a good reputation for tracking , glad to hear it extends to their repair work too.

Thanks for all the suggestion guys.

Tried filling up the coolant, strangely the cap wouldn't budge, could not get it off. It eased and turned a bit then got harder again. As such booked in with the nearest garage(Royal mile service centre) to have a look at it.

Fingers crossed and hoping it's not a big one. Will update how it went.

Thanks, much appreciated. Just got the car back from a garage(Royal mile service centre, few yards away from my home), it was pressure tested and a leak was found in a hose pipe and was replaced, coolant filled up.

If anybody needs to know: Labour charges were 52/hr and this work was billed for 2 hrs of labour.

Wow, didn't realise there was a garage there. Thought was just the trader with the forecourt. How many yards did you live away exactly? I stayed in Redhall Crescent so might have been even closer!
