Hi all. I'm taking the missus off for a romantic weekend away up in bonnie Scotland soonish, I'm also hoping to get some hoonage in on some of the great roads up there. We're going to be be based fairly close to Mull and I was wondering if it's worth popping over to sample the roads? Thanks in advance for any feedback. smile

www.2300club.org  is the Tour of Mull rally website. The rally was mentioned in the recent Evo article done up there.

Have a look for the stage maps for a guide to the good roads. Calgary bay is stunning, the hill road is an experience and the more exposed western roads round Gribun and Scridain are just awesome.

Please remember most of these are single track so the usual common sense precautions should be taken. It's not just vehicles, animals can be a major hazard too.

Watch out for some monster pot holes as well.

LOL the top one looks like the gateway we use for the Calgary bay stage finish....?

This is the Derviag hairpins - sideways is not compulsory

This happened on Calgary one year - if you're there have a look over the barrier to see how close he was to real disaster.....

well I would recommend a drive down to Finnofort on the south western tip would be the best drive for a day trip. On a nice day the drive along the north side of the Ross is brilliant. I was there a couple of weeks ago, I'll post my pics next time I'm on my computer.

I love Mull and know the bay well.
With that in mind the picture of the Astra!!!!!
Last time I was there I was cycling, the roads feel a lot bigger on a bike. Until a post man decides to overtake in his van on a bridge. A bridge that is very narrow and has metal barriers.

You can drive at 30-50 on Mull and feel like you are about to break the time travel barrier.

Pictures of our trip a couple of weeks back. We didn't really get the best weather though but still had a great time...

Here's some general pics on the Ross of Mull:

Used to be a ferry from Mull to Lochaline (on the Argyll side ) - make a nice return , Oban --Mull ,returning via Lochaline and Corran .Again those roads on the Argyll side are mostly single track (except Strontian to Corran, which is single carriage way and Corran -Oban)

As the man said - BEWARE OF ANIMALS ---this is crofting country where the sheep reigns supreme ( and sheep can total most cars )---add to that deer (and in the summer ,French tourists )

If you go to Mull make sure your dampers & brakes are up to scratch as you'll give both a good workout on the islands roads... and fuel cost an absolute fortune there too.

Thanks to all for the feedback and pics etc!

Not long until we go now, really looking forward to it, so long as it doesn't snow!

Has anyone been to the coffee shop @ Glenmore Castle? Thought I'd pause here for a spot of lunch? Any good?

Cheers,

Ed.

Do you mean Glengorm? http://www.glengormcastle.co.uk/coffeeshop.htm

We have used the cottages in the grounds of the castle for the last 15 years on rally week. The castle has changed hands and the new folk have a good reputation. Some of our team have eaten there and had good things to report.

Ed,

There's a (part-time) PH'r who grew up no Mull. Indeed, his mum still owns / runs the hardware shop in Tobe.

I'll email a link to this thread straight away.

He and his driver have done surprisingly well in the 'tour' ... latterly in a Vauxhall engined Mk2 Escort.

Cheers,

Eric smile

I love the Mull roads, used to go out with a lass from Tobermory and was there every other weekend. Her dad ran a haulage company so got free tickets for the ferry to get the old Cooper S over anytime I wanted.

145hp mini with an LSD on Mull roads.... fond memories hehe

Not been there for ages though....

Returned yesterday, the weather was a bit changable but the roads lived up to my expectations!

830 miles in total and some really memorable driving experiences. Excellent! thumbup

A few pics from the trip:

Pausing on the approach to Glencoe after a storming blast across Rannoch Moor.

A bit of wildlife.

On the Localine - Fishnish ferry to Mull.

A taster of the weather to come.

Once on Mull, we headed for Tobermory, then out to Glengorm Castle for lunch @ the coffee shop - unfortunately it was closed so back to Tobermory for fish & chips on the quayside (in the rain!). We then headed out towards Dervaig (had some fun on the hairpins!biggrin), round to Calgary bay - the sun came out here - beautiful spot. Unfortunately we couldn't stop because time was flying by and we realised we had to get to the ferry for 5:25, so it was shoe down from here onwards which was pretty enjoyable except for the pothole avoidence that had the missus hanging onto her seat a couple of times. We made the ferry with about 10 mins to spare! Phew..

Some jolly fellows that were hiding round a bend!

Back on the mainland, and on what has to be my favourite section from Lochaline to Corran ferry via Kingairloch (A884 - B8043 - A861). Sublime.... just watch out for the wild goats on the shoreline just after Camasnacroise.

Going to revive this 10 year old thread if no one minds...
Biking (motorbiking) up to Mull in early May and will have a day/night on the island!
What are the must see/do/drive/eat/drink things to be at?
Also - is Oban a good town to stay at the night before?
