Fuel tank support and fixing for Vixen.

Here I am again with a question.

The fuel tank should be (must be) fixed in a save way.
When I got the car it was laying loose in the back.

Now I want to know what is a save way of fixing.
I understand the straps with fixing bolts on top and rubber between tank/strap.
But how are the straps fixed to the body?
With glass fiber only ? But how do you know that its strong enough?
Any pics will help.

Recall that my 71 2500 based on S3 had the straps fibre glassed into position. Also recall that the fibre glassing was complete mess - maybe the straps had broken away and someone had the awkward job of trying to refix in a confined space ! Anyway I decided to fix the straps through the floor with some nice stainless steel screws with a shallow head. You cannot see them from back of the car unless you stick you head underneath.

Most logic solution. I had already search for the holes through the bottom, but none found.
My worry is the shearing of glassfibre as you mentioned.
In my project it is easy to reach the bottom because no obstruction of window or tank.

Will wait for other (perhaps better??) ideas.

On my Vixen S3, the straps are fixed to the floor with a bolt through the glassfibre.

Can you (also?) make a connection to the bolts that connect to the rear chassis rail? I have made an extra connection to higher chassis parts as well, but used another fuel tank (rectangular).

I combine the steel frame fixed to the frame bolts and 2 bolts through the body.

Rubber isolator in between tank and strap.

No foam.

Wires for the rear lights through a duct glued to the body so neat and tidy.

Like this very much, but would suggest a breather hole in the floor bottom.

Working on it as we speak ;-) The tank has holes for a roll over vent, fuel pick up and fuel return, as well as a fuel filler breather, all of which I will connect. I have extended and strengthened the mounting ears of the rear suspension pick up point for the roll over hoop and the fuel tank mounting bracket.

Hi Ty,

The tank came with the project when I acquired it, no markings on it unfortunately. But it seems just a generic tank, not specifically made for a TVR. I think there are some options, just a small selection of non-custom made ones I list here below, but you can always have a custom one made up, it should not be too expensive (I had once one made up for a kitcar for around 250 usd). Its an American RCi or maybe RCL tank... Summit Racing sell them. I have one in the racer.

Neil, you're completely right! I remember that name from the fuel filler cap I did not use.

You could also use "alloy bobbins" to attach the Tank Straps. Alloy Bobbins are used many times on Lotus Elans
