I lent my Graham Robson book out some years ago and never got it back so not sure why I 'know' this but I believe there were 103 390SEs, of which 'about 10%' were actually 420SEs (owners with even deeper pockets), making a likely production of 90-93 390SEs.
Now my engine being 45 in mid-87 and the last of the 390SEs being 1989 (I think, anyone got a later one?) should tally with however many 390SEs Robson says were made post-87, but as I say I can't check.
That would give you a starting point for the first 400SE engine numbers (assuming NCK only built RV8s for TVR and I don't know that to be true either, I'd suspect not ).
Hi Ian. Was there ever a definitive number of Andy Rouse engines and John Eales engines before the Kawasaki guys took over? Always wondered...Now my engine being 45 in mid-87 and the last of the 390SEs being 1989 (I think, anyone got a later one?) should tally with however many 390SEs Robson says were made post-87, but as I say I can't check.

The earliest 390SE cars had Andy Rouse Engineering engines fitted ARE TVR***
Some other early cars has 30A***** serial numbers or 37A****
Then some had JE**** and finally NCK***
400/450SE generally had NCK*** engines, but some v late 450SE had 47A45P**** fitted
V8S, early Griffiths & Chimaeras had 47A**P**** and finally the "serpentine" engines are 37A**P****

I had a 400SE some years ago. A 1992 J plate with engine number starting 47A.....
Also owned (although I would rather forget !) a 390SE 1985 model with engine number (if I recall correctly) ARE TVR 018.
Hope that is of some interest ! :-)
yes very much of interest, the 47A one must have been an engine swap, the 390se is an early one and the ARE signifies an Andy Rouse engine, so pre NCK, supposed to be very highly tuned. why rather forget? would have thought it would be a fabulous sports car? cheers for your input. Also owned (although I would rather forget !) a 390SE 1985 model with engine number (if I recall correctly) ARE TVR 018.
