Hello, you may find it worth your while to do away with that nasty mechanical voltage stabiliser. There are many electronic voltage stabilisers that are a direct replacement for yours and they are much better.

If you're not frightened of a bit of soldering, the cheapest way to get a new regulator is to use an LM317 from your local electronics shop.
With a few components, you can make an ADJUSTABLE regulator for much less than 12 quid or equiv. bucks... Look up LM317 in your search engine, they are really easy to wire up. Lucas gauges are 10 volt. The ones you buy will probably be a fixed voltage version of one of these anyway.
Suppressors - not sure if you need one at all today - FM radios are pretty much immune to noise, and DAB radio definitely is, as it's a digital system.
If your FM radio/MP3 crackles there's something else wrong in the supply setup....
