Anyone know the part number for the coil on an 1986 280i? Even better, a USA model?

BAP/GEON, a foreign parts specialist here, couldn't match the suggested Intermotor INT11400 to anything and sold me a very expensive Bosch coil which doesn't work.

Our go-to TVR specialist cross-referenced to a different coil which didn't work - just tried it.

Doesn't work = no spark out. If i swap the old one back, it starts right up (if the coil is cold). Grrrr.

Thanks! Grady

If it's the same as the Euro ones (which have a blue resistance wire in series with the coil) then its an ordinary Lucas/Bosch 6 volt ignition coil, as fitted to lots
of Ford Europe and BL cars. When cranking there is a switch in the starter which shorts out the resistance wire so 6 volt coil gives a nice spark even if battery voltage low.

If you are really stuck a 12 volt coil will do, but short out the big blue resistance wire.

Intermotor 11400 is a "good" part number, what number is on your expensive new Bosch coil?

Have you tried putting a 12 volt feed directly to the coil +ve terminal?

Bosch 0 221 122 001

I'm sure the Intermotor # is valid, they just couldn't match it up.

There are 4 or 5 varieties of the 11400. Here's the Capri 2.8 one.

Thanks Alex.

Just to hopefully wrap this up, I finally bought a NAPA/Echlin IC12 ($42.00 USD) which so far is working perfectly. Thanks for the help! Grady
