We have an older Ranger and two new petrol Subaru Outbacks at work. I will always take the Ranger over the Outbacks. Much more involving to drive. The Outbacks are competent, but dull as ditchwater. Don't write off some of the other alternatives. As others have said, our roads are really all negotiable by your average daily driver. Your only need the extra clearance and grip if you intend doing some serious off-road work. I run an S4 manual and take it pretty near anywhere, no problems.
