OP
We moved from SE London to Sittingbourne, were stuck there for 6 years until we could afford to move bag
You want to get away from Burger Shops and Nail bars, I would avoid anything on that Medway line until Faversham which is slightly better but further out
The commute is fine if not long, when things go well, my wife routinely got stuck at Rochester for one reason or another and it was wholly unreliable, its also a nightmare if you go out in town as you'll end up hanging around Gillingham at 1am for the last Dover train home
Maidstone is slightly better and some of the villages around it are lovely but your main shopping is still Maidstone although its no worse than most towns
Are you wanting suburbia or more rural/semi rural?
I'd echo the TWells comments and the surrounding areas, you can also slip down into Sussex Crowborough being quite popular
I would stay West of the M20 as a rule

If you move slightly more west got the Oxted line so possibility of Edenbridge and Lingfield...
I often get the train into london from Burgess Hill, it isn't bad the odd Gatwick and Croydon squeeze but with Southern have Victoria or Thameslink with London Bridge, St Pancras and beyond. Weekly ticket is just over £100.
