Looking for some advice if possible and yes sorry I am one of 'them' re cyclist!

I might be moving out to work at the Gyle business park. I currently stay around Cramond/Davidson Mains and cycle into work which is at the West End so mainly this is on the cycle path, does anyone know of a good route from around Cramond too the Gyle?

Would rather avoid busy roads if possible but also off road as I have a road bike. Any advice appreciated!

Thanks

Can't say I do but good decision, the bottle necks out of this place every evening are woeful! I know my boss used to walk through the park that David Lloyd backs onto and past the train station, its a fairly quiet stretch traffic wise.

Is it that bad?! I have the option too drive but did think this plus I always believe the bike is quicker plus wakes me up!

Hi OP you probably pass me in the morning - I do D-Mains to Newington on the cycle paths in the morning - fat chap on a black and white crosstrail!

I grew up in Cramond and used to cycle over to the Gyle/Marionville Models when it was still there. We took the direct route, Maybury Road, which is still probably the best route but it is busy and not sure I'd fancy it at rush hour on a bike. There is Cammo walk that cuts most of Maybury Road out and then round by Turnhouse Road would take you to Glasgow Road but it is a detour with a rather steep hill.

where are you though? Cramond or Davidsons Mains? there is quite a difference between them (and for your route - Corstorphine hill!)

Coming from Barnton to the Gyle you have 3 options -

(1) - the Maybury - I wouldnt cycle up this road - Id use the pavement - its wide and if you cycle on the west side, utterly empty - then you can cross at the lights and into the gyle.
(2) Cammo Walk - empty (bumpy) and a small steep hill, but might be a fair distance out your way
(3) East Craigs - from Barnton nip into this scheme and cycle along the roads/paths to Craigmount high-school, then cut down through North Gyle to either the Maybury or across and into south Gyle via the paths - dont know how easy it is to cross the railway apart form at gyle station or just up form the Maybury though

if you are coming for D-mains - you can cut up Drum-brae, take the first right and this will feed you onto the paths that go through East Craigs. use the path through the woods next to the Royal High - its fine on a road bike.

I used to cycle all the time from Currie to Cramond/D-mains (admittedly a few years ago) on a road-bike, and did use many of the off-road paths - never had a problem because of it.

Yeah, I try to leave just before 4 or it gets pretty slow. Around 5 I've seen it take a hour to get past the shopping centre

Will keep an eye out. I blend in with the many high vis jackets I'm afraid so hard to describe! Usually on a silver FELT road bike if that helps!

Thanks for this. I stay near enough too the Tesco which is Davidson Mains.

Any idea on the path that runs alongside David Lloyd just off Glasgow Rd, does this lead into the Gyle?

Blackhall Cycle path to Roseburn
Hop the road for a short ride to Balgreen tram stop
Tram Cycle path all the way to South Gyle

Only about 5 mins of road riding - the rest is cycle path
