Well if you watch any of those Police camera Action shows I would say he did not get off lightly at all!

I recently saw one of those programs, there was this Black guy from Africa, been living in the UK for over 7 years, had not bothered getting a UK driving licence
(By the way that's compulsory after a short period of time)
then he jumped two red lights, had no insurance on his car, no MOT that's now a mandatory £100 fine and he got 6 months ban and£130 quid fine,
Justice my arse!

Here we have a guy in a Audi S4 performance car with good brakes and engineering driving well within the cars limits on the UK's fastest roads (a motorway) , Fully insured and legal and all he is doing is getting from one place to another.
And the guy gets a Years ban + Large fine.

Seriously! Bloody Joke in my book.
If he had been tailgating or on the phone, cutting in and out of cars and plain dangerous driving, then fair cop but just for speeding personally I think this is pretty sad.

Personally I feel its about time this country woke up, and should have sections of Motorways unrestricted like in Germany, where you can actually get from A to B in a decent time.

What is it with Police Camera Action? They once showed a business man in his 911 approaching 70mph in a 30mph high street. Police stopped him then gave him a warning not to do it again and that next time he would be booked. If it was me they'd caught, I'm sure I'd be banned. Maybe it's just this made for tv malarkey.

They are exempt from MOT tests.

Have you seen the skill level and competency of the average British driver compared to that of their German counterpart?
D'you seriously want people who put the wrong fuel in their car, don't know how to turn off their fog lights and still call Lane 1 "The Slow Lane" driving at triple figure speeds?

Yes, Germans and other mainland Europeans are equally as bad judging by the "worst driving" type video on Youtube!

Presumably the Police video is also the 'worst' part of the recorded driving. Visibility looks good, line of sight excellent, traffic pretty spartan, with long spacing between vehicles in lane 2, none of the carsin lane 2 or 3 looked like they were in need of an overtake to come into lane 3.

I would agree with this, but the standard of driving in this country is beyond poor. I would feel unsafe pushing on at over 130mph and would just be waiting for some tt in a Nissan Note to pull into my lane doing 65mph for no apparent reason whatsoever.

Surely the presence of a limit promotes bad driving ?

In the UK, very few folks do over 90 mph, so one look when overtaking is enough.
There is plenty of slack in the system for poor driving and it takes all day to make a long journey.

In Germany, folks mostly drive what they have flat out and 150 mph is a common speed.
Looking at least twice is not merely prudent, it's a vital requirement for living to see tomorrow.
Doing 400 miles in four hours or less is completely realistic.

UK 70 mph speed limit hasn't changed in fifty years and is well out of date.
As is, there is no political will to change the limit so it won't be changing anytime soon.

In my view, it should be reviewed every ten years and the engineering best practice
of the 85% rule used to set the limit according to the traffic, not just an arbitrary number
from a long time ago. There is time and money to be saved.

And yet in the UK there always seems to be some motive to reduce the speed limits - think M1/M3 to reduce carbon emissions IIRC? Problem with this country is areas are now so congested theres no room to even get to the speed limit. I know my morning commute is spent doing 10-20mph under the limit most of the time. Theres one nice backroad, big open road with sweeping bends, limit 50mph, yet people do 30.

I don't drive there regularly, but in my experience of Germany 150mph was definitely not common. I'm also pretty sure the majority of the traffic was not driving as fast as they could.

Traffic flows better there, but that's true of most mainland countries compared to our congested roads.

Regarding the original story, much as I like driving fast - he was traveling at almost 150mph. He is lucky he didn't go to prison and I think his fine was very light. Regardless of whether they are outdated, we do have speed limits and if you decide to break them then you have to accept the punishment.

(And yes, allegedly I do speed)

Think they're wide awake tbh. Enough people fail to drive at our current limits without crashing. Can you imagine it unrestricted??! No limits is useless if you're stuck behind another accident

Let's be sensible about this, Could one do 150 + on the M25 at 7am near heathrow? No of course not, but with all the cameras being rolled out around the country, there could be a case that when sections of the motorway are pretty much empty, that speeds could be increased on the smart motorways, Example 4am heading down to Dover road practically empty, why not allow a much higher speed. Same with motorways late at night. Oh hang on the Orange Cone Army then come out rolleyes

I would actually like to see the same rules being applied over here as they have in France during bad / wet weather, If its wet its a compulsory slow down. If the roads are dry the speed is faster.

Some may want to, but he was doing it between J6 and J7 which I believe is still "stupid" motorway for now - and looks pretty quiet on the link. Still probably not a good idea though!

But why does the punishment seem to be linked to the place in society that those "knicked" occupy?

Surely if a drugged up illegal immigrant with no licence doing 90 in an old jap-crap that has no insurance hits me when I cross the road on a crossing I'll be just as dead as if I get hit by a pissed pillar of the community doing 90 in an A3 that is insured.

Shouldn't the punishment be geared to the enormity of the offence and it's consequences regardless of the means of whoever did it?
