Birthday meal - needs to be good food and under £30 a head for at least 2 courses, preferably 3. Ideal food is gastro pub stuff - posh burgers etc. Needs to have at least one vegetarian and one gluten free option - and allow a few kids under 10.

Any ideas?

Yorkshire Rose was favourite until they sent the details and it appears they are charging more for 2 courses than they would if we simply walked in off the street and ordered from their menu (and on a Wednesday evening at 6pm we almost certainly could).

What about the Royal Foresters. Had a very pleasant Sunday there recently.

Anybody got any others?

Peacock Farm is a nice venue, should be comfortably in budget

Would get my vote, but even if we could get in I think the food would be "too posh". I suggested Bluebells - which I rate highly - but apparently that's not the right kind of food......

That menu looks promising - the kind of food I think is expected, and promising prices. Thanks.

Keep them coming!

Pub:
Crown and Cushion, near Sandhurst
Golden Retriever, also near Sandhurst
Heron on the Lake, Fleet
A bit more spenny, The Phoenix in Hartley Wintney

Otherwise, I like the two Gurkha places in Farnborough.

Tally Ho in eversley is good for gluten free stuff (my wife is coeliac) and burgers etc are great. Lots of other decent pub food, certainly a whole lot better than Peacock farm.

Thanks for all the replies.

The current favourite seems to be Ascot Grill - which is owned by the same people who own Bluebells (which we discovered will close shortly and be relocated elsewhere). Whether they tick all the other boxes that were required I have yet to be told!

Have you tried the Brickmakers in Windlesham? My perception is that they'd be more on budget than the Ascot grill.

The other similar to the Ascot Grill would be Piccolinos at Virginia Water.

Or the Thatched tavern in Cheapside - space might be an issue though.

I wasn't aware about Bluebells - I guess there'll be another 'name' lined up for that site.

For 23 you're likely going to have to pre-order. It's unlikely that anywhere will take a booking in the standard way as they would for a table of 4. You'll need to choose the venue carefully if you want everyone served at anything like the same time - many kitchens might struggle to cope unless they gear up specifically.

Hope you have a great evening!

I don't know - what they said was that they had been made an offer they could not refuse to terminate their lease early. Makes me wonder if the site is going to be used for something entirely different.

I used to live in Binfield - the service at Peacocks Farm was pretty random!

The Shepherd's House was way better - and our experience of the Yorkshire Rose was just that it got worse every time we went. banghead

If you want to "push the boat out" the Hinds Head in Bray takes a lot of beating. thumbup

Have a great time wherever you go!

Funnily enough I overheard a conversation in the post office about the change of ownership - it's quite soon I understand.

One of my friends knows the owner, apparently they have another venue lined up so will be re-opening locally a short while after the current one closes. The site has been sold for housing, no surprise there!

Our local, The Crooked Billet in Crowthorne. Food is superb and I'm fairly sure they could accommodate that number of people.

To conclude the thread :

As I mentioned earlier, Ascot Grill was the favourite and that's where we went last night. Food was excellent, and the staff did an excellent job of maintaining around a dozen separate bills for one large single table.

Dishes worth mentioning - the guy next to me had the "ultimate burger" which was enormous - and apparently tasted as good as it looked. I had ribs, which were also absolutely massive and superb. Will definitely be going back there at some point, although with rather less people.
