Blanket 20 zone across the whole borough proposed for next year. Consultation now open until December 21st.
Scheme excludes S Circular and A316 but covers every other road from Barnes to Hampton.

I've e mailed the council to see where they get their stats from.

Both Portsmouth and Bath found after implementing the same 20mph zones with no traffic calming that avcidents and casualties went up. Bath council went as far as to say that there were ' no discernible improvements'

I've asked that given they will be using the same methodology why do they expect different results?

Let's see what response I get

I'm from Portsmouth originally. Much agree. We'll get a blanket 20 of course, but let's go down swinging

Definitely doomed - my mother lives in the London Borough of Sutton that has generally been ruled by the sort of Greeny, sort of lefty, pointless Lib Dem tw*ts. But in the last General Election they finally saw some sense and elected a Tory MP!

So if you can hang on in there you never know! laugh

Let's not forget that the Lib Dems were voted out in Richmond last time because they were looking to implement increases to parking permits in line with engine emissions so some permits would have been £500+!

The council listened to us when local residents objected to their plan for permit parking in our area.

Plus, plod barely enforce the 20mph limit in Richmond park as it is. Theyve not got the capacity. Unless the council instals dozens of cameras - I wouldn't put it past them - I cannot see much changing.

It's certainly not enforced in London, regularly see traffic along London Wall doing 50mph. Pointless tokenism.

When I moved in in 2009 the Lib Dems were in, my parking permit cost £450 iirc. Mk 1 TT with CO2emissions of 226 g/km, threshold was 225!

The MP was voted out in 2010/11 in favour of Conservative eco-warrior Goldsmith and that year the permits were a more palatable £90. Then they lost the seat to the liberals by a margin of 50 or something, on the back of Brexit rebellion in the 2016 GE.

Nothing will change except for letters from the local speedwatch groups for doing 30 mph on the arterial routes e.g. A3xx.

I don't disagree but the problem is there will always be that one driver who does adhere religiously to the speed limit (or ends up doing 18mph just to be sure) that holds everyone else up. One of the roads I drive regularly changes from 20mph to 30mph where it transitions from LB of Hounslow to Richmond but people still drive at 20.

The other problem is that by enforcing a 20mph blanket ban across the borough then areas where 20mph would make sense (outside schools for example) become no different .

I only ever visit outlying London Boroughs these days, but I'd love to have an opportunity to exceed 20 mph. banghead

Worthing BC listened when a 20 limit was proposed; it was canned!

Worthing is a safe Tory seat. Looking at the recent voting history the closest it came was in 2010, 8-6 Conservative-Liberal. Richmond is 50-50 Con-Lib and swings wildly between them depending on voter sentiment at the time. Liberal last time, Brexit protest vote, less about the actual local manifestos.

I sat in on the first of 6 or so public consultations at York House this evening. Some observations:

1. About 100 attended. No signage for the event, I wasn't entirely sure where to go;

2. Room was about 70/30 in favour of the new limits with applause for those speaking in favour, less so for those making arguments against. Mix of old and young, I'd say average age late 40s;

3. 20 mph was buried in among other local issues, the reason given by the chairman was that it was always a mixed agenda evening but there had clearly been a 'misunderstanding' over the format of the evening;

4. Those speaking against had their concerns answered but then swiftly moved on to the next question. One guy at the start commenced what seemed like a considered piece on the various reasons why the scheme was a poor idea, but was closed down by the chair pretty sharpish;

One lady asked what confidence we could have that the council would abide by the outcome of the consultation, as it felt like a done deal already. The answer given (Cllr Ehmann, Lib Dem and Cllr for transport etc) was that the council was elected on a manifesto including 20 mph and that is the mandate, so in fact they don't have to consult at all. At which point I zoned out a bit.

About time to pick on pedestrians, most wander across roads head down texting, give the drivers a break. Been said so many times drivers will be concentrating on speedo more than the roads, whether there has been any accidents due to that I don't know, but it's often mentioned.

It seems absurd that it's been proven not to work and will be costly to roll out yet they still press ahead. No doubt to be seen to be 'doing something'.

One thing I've never really understood; people who live in expensive areas must earn a lot, therefore they're probably of above average intelligence, qualifications etc. So how do massive swathes of the London region end up with idiot MPs at the helm? The turkeys seem to be voting for Christmas.

Traffic in that area is generally a nightmare. When I lived there the only sensible use for a car was weekend escapes and the odd supermarket run. I can well imagine that there's a large constituency who would vote for any measures that might discourage commuters from driving through the borough. I can't imagine the average speed would be anywhere near 20mph at the moment.

Wonder if cyclists will be done for speeding? Most cyclists in my area seem to do 25 to 30mph!

The run down from Twickenham to Hampton Wick should be interesting. Doubt anyone will be doing 20 along that road. Everywhere else, I'd be lucky to exceed 20.
