Oh dear.

I drove to Surbiton on Sunday - first time I'd been up that way in years. Went through a few 20mph limits - with cameras - and I've never seen so many speed bumps of varying types in my life. It was a nightmare.

Unfortunately, it looks like it's a trip I might be making more often, at least for a little while.
That's one of the main issues, there has been no real consistency in the way these schemes have been implemented across Kingston.

Speed limit-wise, it tends to be signed quite well, but that isn't always enough if it is illogical. Up until a few years ago, there were quite a few examples in Surbiton where you could turn off a major road that had a 20 limit, into a much more minor one clogged with parked cars that was a 30 limit.

They seem to have fixed those now, but it doesn't make for the easiest place to drive, especially for those that don't do it often.

I've just moved to the borough.

Came back from the Peaks last week and the last 5 miles after being at Warp speed was bloody infuriating.

It was late and only Christmas ditherers on the road driving at 15 and stopping for no reason.

These were wide roads.

Thing is now everyone drives at 20 there is no perceived danger. Cars and bikes pull out at the last second, pedestrians stroll into the road but the drivers are lulled into a coma.

Try riding around the area on my motorbike. Fk me, brain numbing. Especially that road up to Kew Bridge past the Gardens.

And don't get me on the Poll tax. I was paying £50 a month on a 2 bed in Wandsworth, but now £120 on a tiny one bed.

Still nice area though and I can now actually have quite a few companies quote me on bike insurance. Nigh on impossible in Wandsworth.

Oh yes, I try to drive without breaking the speed limit everywhere and noticed that even at 30, people would pull out at the last minute.

That is a crazy difference when you put it like that. I suppose you have moved from the cheapest borough for Council Tax to one of the most expensive. Kingston's rates are even higher, but property prices are a bit cheaper so probably not quite as painful overall.

Thanks for posting the Kingston link, I thought they'd already done it tbf. Interesting claims on the link, it will be interesting to see how they spin 2018s DfT report on 20mph given that is now well in the public domain.

If you want any source data for your response drop me a PM. I haven't added 2018 numbers yet but will do if you want a short cut.

As for traffic down here... I drove back from outside Loughborough a few months ago, it took longer to get from M25 J15 to my house than to do the 100 miles more or less from Loughborough to J15, via the A5. Some nights leaving work, a journey of 16 miles against the flow, I could be in Birmingham before I could get home. It's carnage.

Are you not getting speed humps on main roads yet? That’ll be next like round here.

Certainly, there are a few on the road from Hampton Wick to Twickenham.

Do you have a link to the report? I will start sharing it.

Edit: which bit supports a 30 zone? It seems moderately pro-20.

Implementation now looks completed, just some repeaters to uncover north of A316 in Whitton.

Casualty figures for 2020 will be released end of September 2021. There'll be no useful emissions / air quality data because Hammersmith bridge closure has massively increased congestion in half the borough.

Enjoy the new regime, comrades.

They've just added the 20mph repeaters on the A3004 last week between the A316 and Isleworth.

It's changed my driving already - I used to come off the 316 at Hanworth and use the 312 down to Sunbury and then up to Hampton Court - given the number of mouth breathers steadfastly doing 16 mph now for the whole route I now go via Kempton Park - slightly longer route but no slower and less stress than crawling along between 1st and 2nd gear

I see people routinely doing 25 between Kingston and Twickenham now. Even if the signs flash a smiley face when they do 25, they don't clock that it means it's a 30 zone. May start having to drop down a gear for a quick overtake.

I can do 20 on my bike, they're holding me up too. I overtook one lady the other week, not in the borough but closer to work.15 mph then down to 10 over the bumps, after 1/4 mile I'd had enough and went by after a speed bump. Then she woke up.

I like simple responses like that. No doubt the culprit will get done for criminal damage if they can catch him

If he's clever, he'll get away from the scene of the crime by driving at 21mph

Because we know that no police car would do over 20mph in a 20 zone if they're not on a call. yes

Good luck being able to do 20mph around Richmond anyway.
