Anyone knows if there are any scrapyard in slough or near Heathrow that lets you walk around freely and strip the parts off yourself. Google search is not able to produce any such scrapyards. frown

many thanks

Saw this earlier but not sure it they let you do the work yourself? Google images shows they stack their cars up which normally means someone else working there gets up n pull the parts off.

Not really very close, but my dad used to swear by the scrapyard in Bicester, used to be an Italian POW camp and had a fountain built by the detainees in the middle of it. My dad used to make a pilgrimage every year from the Hebrides to find bits for whatever banger he was driving at the time! I really hope its still there.

when i was a little kid i remember there being a huge one in rainham/dagenham area. to me it seemed like miles of scrapyards, kind of reminded me of the post-judgement day scenes in terminator

Very few scrapyards let you do that these days.

30 years ago I'd go around with my dad and get parts off cars stacked 3-4 high! Talk about H&S! Great fun and most of the stuff went in our pockets or toolbox.

Those were the days!

I remember spending many hours in the 3rd or 4th car on the pile to get those hard to find bits back in the 70s.

Sunbury Salvage and Atkinsons in Wimbledon stick in my memory.

Not close to you but it was a very good breakers yard that would let you work on the cars. I haven't been in many, many years though.

Used to be a great one near West Drayton on the side of the River Colne, used to got there in the early '70s scrambling over the cars looking for parts. It was beside what became the M4/M25 intersection and from Google maps looks like it's gone. There's lots of car places in the location but doesn't look like a scrappie any more.

I remember that one well.

The two blokes that ran it were dead ringers for Harry H Corbet and Reg Varney. Proper good old boys they were.

There was for a time another yard down there practically next door. There also used to be three yards in Iver at the back of the waterworks. There were three in Slough as well. All now sadly gone.
