On a bit of a wing and a prayer here, but we have just sold the wifes car ( to go this weekend ) and found out that her new car has been recalled, meaning we will be partially car less for a small period of time until we take ownership.

Working through options at the moment, and the idea came to me to ask if anyone has a spare car they aren't using / want using / sitting idle e.t.c.

In return happy to pay beer tokens, money tokens, or can promise that the car will have a full and proper valet and will be returned in showroom condition ( anyone that knows me knows how obsessive I am about car detailing ).

Posted on the off chance anyway... I am in Frimley but willing to travel. My email address on here needs amending so please replay on here until I get that sorted. Thanks

Probably just easier to rent a car if its only for a short period?

We're unsure what period of time it's going to be. Looked at renting, the cheapest car from Enterprise still works out nigh on 100 a week, not affordable for us.

It was only on the off chance someone had a barge that needs some movement. As it stands it looks like we will cancel the sale of her existing car and wait till we get a delivery date.

is your car purchase from a dealer? If so they should fill the void.

can you not ask the dealer to provide you with a demo to cover the delay in the delivery especially as it is due to a recall. You might find that they are sympathetic to an approach like this

Tried this, unfortunately a no go. Car was due to be delivered next week, so far only paid the deposit.

With the greatest of respect, you’re a random off the internet.

Do you really think someone is going to lend you their car?

And if they do trust you, it’ll be for less than £100 a week?

Odd thread...

I think you need to take the supplying dealer to task over this. They are completely ripping the pi55 out of you

I know for a personal fact that people will lend a car to "a random off the internet". It could be an valuable car, or someone might have Granny's Kia Picanto sitting around now that she's hung up her driving gloves but they haven't got round to selling it yet.

Over the years I've both done, and received, favours of varying value from and for said randoms. You pretty quickly get a feel for who's genuine and who's not; sure, you could get burnt but there are a lot more genuine people than rascals on the web. You, and me, for starters, eh?

Your timing sucks a bit. I have barely used my Cayenne for the last 6 months, but decided at the start of this week to start using it more since summer has come to an end.

Do you have any idea of how long you need a car for? I might be able to live without mine for a few weeks, but much longer than that and it would get a tad inconvenient. (And you'd need to make sure you had proper insurance).

I am very local to you which helps.

I only posted this for the benefit of those that know me. I have been on this forum for over 14 years and know hundreds of PHers. If you don't know me, fair enough, and I wouldn't expect you to even reply.

Re the car - its Ford Kuga hybrid, new. Deposit paid 3 weeksa ago, contract and delivery was all supposed to happen this week, then a blanket recall on all models. They don't even know what the recall is for yet. There's nothing they can or will do, we can walk away, but we don't want to as the deal on the car is so good. They are already having to dish our courtesy cars to those who have taken delivery, there's not much they can do for us and why should they, it's a delay they have no control over. I have tried other dealers to try and source stock etc, its the same story everywhere.

The issue is that we have sold her car privately, for a really good price, and to a lovely local chap. He needs it by the weekend, but we don't really want to be without the family car for weeks on end. No idea how long the delay will take either.

Davek thats very kind, as it stands we are awaiting an update from Ford this week and buyer is still waiting in the wings. Im not sure I would ant to put mileage on your cayenne ( unless it is an old snotter ) . We were looking at sheds / old heaps that people have sat idle and need moving / cleaning. I would happily spend a day detailing back to life an old car in return for its use for a week.

We will get it sorted no doubt! My email address should be revalidated here now anyway if you did want to message. Cheers.

@Dizzee, we ended up in a similar situation a couple of years back, I found a 1.6 Golf on FB, about 2 miles away, we paid £500 for it and it was so good we ended up keeping it for about 18 months as a tip/dog car. In the end I sold it for £650 biggrin I viewed it, paid and collected all on the same day. Might be another option?

I hope you find something - it's a great feeling having a very cheap car that you can do what you like with and not worry about in the slightest, and altho obv there is the possibility of problems, I think modern cars are much less prone to it than stuff from the 80s etc. Plus you can google the solution to just about anything now!

Many years ago mum managed to hole the engine in her classic (E30) 318i. My sister and I decided to get her something to tide her over until we found a permanent car, and I found a local E36 318i model for £1500. Only it was much better than we expected and it became the permanent car which she kept it for 8 years and it sailed through every MOT without fail. We eventually sold it for £800, so that was money well spent!
