Looking for a decent place for an MOT in Aberdeen city-
Car’s an 2007 A4 TDi 170 Quattro. Not expecting it to need a whole lot, but I’d like some where that’s trustworthy!

Cheers

I've had a few good experiences with Scott at Premier Motors on the Hardgate. He's ex-BMW but did some work on my Golf and my Cayman R so does other marques no bother. I'll be taking my SQ5 to him for an MOT and brakes in March unless anyone has better recommendations here!

If you want an honest MOT, go to one of the local council places. That being said I'm not sure if they're doing public MOTs just now with Covid but it's a decent piece of general advice. Council fleet services depots etc. have to offer tests to the general public but they're not allowed to carry out repair work for them so you know you'll get a fair test. Aberdeen city have one beside Kittybrewster Retail Park and the Aberdeenshire Council place is in Inverurie. I've used the 'shire place a few times, they're sound.

Edit to add - if they're not an option just now then try AJ Ross, behind the church on Great Western Road.

Tried Aberdeen Volkscentre out at Kingswells ?
Do MOTs and loads of VW/Audi as you would expect.

John has been a VW guy for many years.
Has a good reputation around Aberdeen.

As per previous entry Scott at the Hardgate comes recommended too, fixes BMWs for a guy I know.

He doesn't do MOTs. He sends them elsewhere.

I've used A J Ross and recommended them to others for years. You may find cheaper labour rates but they are the type who wont find work that isn't needed. Indeed when I have put a few cars to them recently I've pre-authorised a pile or work if they think it needs doing and they contacted me to say it wasn't needed when I'm sure many would just have done it. They actually damaged a friends car when it was there (it was an unlucky accident that happened) and were extremely good at getting it repaired to a very high standard, lent him a car and did a free service and brake pad change - I mention is as I always think that how a business deals with things when they go wrong is a reflection of the business ethos.

Just to come back to this, I've had positive experiences getting quotes from Autocentre Invuerirue, AJ Ross and Scott at Premier Motors this week.

Prices are broadly comparable with Autocentre Inverurie coming out marginally cheaper and offering a courtesy car but given the current COVID restrictions and Paul's recommendation above I think the SQ5 will be going into AJ Ross for its MOT and brakes. They came straight out and said let's put it in for a test first and then see what needs doing which is a refreshing attitude (especially given the cost of SQ5 front disks which you can only get from Audi!).

Will report back at the end of the month once it's done!

A quick Google shows you can get the discs from numerous places.

Mtech are about the cheapest by the looks of it.

Is this becoming the norm/acceptable practice for garages?

I put my motor in for work to be done prior to being Mot'd, but when i collected it, they said they'd taken it for MOT first for the above reason, then done the work and had it retested (the only failure was the work I'd asked them to do)

This means I now have a failed MOT in the system for something which I knew needed done, and asked them to do, so in my head it looks bad if/when future buyers look through the MOT history

Not true, you can get them online like I did, just make sure they are 380mm (from memory)

The guy who did their MOTs for years is now out at Farburn Motors in Dyce. Can't say if that will affect GCM's MOTs, given how subjective the tests are, but it's worth knowing if you had previous good experiences with that particular tester.

I'm intrigued by this, AJ Ross said they'll fit discs I source myself but have read a fair few reviews of the MTEC ones saying that they've warped a few hundred miles after fitting - really don't want to have to cough up for both aftermarket and Audi discs if that's the case! Do you recall where you got yours from?

Must have had 2 testing as the owner Stuart has done mine the last few years and the last one only a few weeks ago

Got my SQ5 back from Autocentre Inverurie today - they collected and dropped it off as promised and very happy with the service.

MOT was £50 and I went with the genuine Audi disks in the end so a bit pricey for parts but no complaints here. They even managed to clear my blocked rear washer jet and realign my exhaust tips free of charge. Will definitely use them again.

Another option outside Aberdeen I've used is East Mains Garage beside Drum Garden Centre. They can usually give you a time slot, drop the car off, walk to the garden centre for a nosey/coffee etc, then car is ready when you get back.
Always had good friendly service there.
