Hello everybody
I have searched the net in vain with no luck so hope I can get your opinion -I have been told the commute up the M1 from Rugby to Derby is a nightmare and I am deciding between regular daily car commute there or train to London for studying. I would trial run it myself but with lockdown not sure Ill get a realistic picture so could I ask your opinion based on normal non covid times.

Comes down to time of day and end point... I'm guessing maybe you are looking at Derby University?

M1 isn't the only route also, usually quiet going A5, to A444 to A42 to A50 to A6 if going to the centre

Or take the smaller roads and go A42 then come off at Measham, through to Swadlincote, Repton, Willington to the A50/A38 island

University is out on the A38 side of things

You'd be looking at 60mins minimum, practically about 90 each way to get to Uni each day

Wife commutes to Derby Uni. We are J22 of the M1. It’s 40 minutes off peak and closer to 50 minutes at peak. She commutes M1 - A50 - Ring Road route.

One of my colleagues lives in Rugby. We trawl a fair few places together for work. It’s 30 minutes off peak and 40 minutes peak from J22 to rugby.

Therefore I conclude you’re looking at at 1hr10 minimum and 1hr30 at ‘normal’ times. Add to that the regular st fest that is the M1 or the A50 interchange. The number of times she calls and says ‘I’m running late’ due to accident/ traffic in unreal. I wouldn’t do it.

I used to do Derby to Northampton about 20 years ago, it could be OK at weekends but it was often awful midweek. No way would I do it now, with the extra traffic, anpr, specs, variable speed limits, all the gantry's and the monitoring equipment. Lot's of extra lanes now too, but each one chokka and slow moving. It's bad enough on the odd one off trip.
