Well I just had an offer accepted on a property on the Western side of Cove near the Plough and Horses.

It's not necessarily where I would have chosen but the property is ideal and it's within budget so I guess the location may be the compromise, although I've visited a few times and it seems OK.

Having lived in Bracknell Forest since 2005 I have some knowledge of the area as my nearest B & Q, Morrisons, Asda, Furniture Village and Oak Furnitureland were all in Farnborough! And when I was working in Guildford in the late 80s (living in Ash) I did visit my employer's site in Southwood a few times.

But I have no detailed knowledge of the area as one to live in, so any feedback would be much appreciated. thumbup

I recently moved out of Cove/Southwood. What do you want to know?

Just wondering if there tends to be any sort of community feel/neighbourliness. Do local people speak to each other or just go about their own business?

Is there any anti-social behaviour or other things to look out for?

Thanks.

I was on a cul de sac off Southwood Rd towards Morrisons. Neighbours were all fine. Mine used to bring my bins back and let me use their brown garden bin. All seemed quite normal. I didn't notice any anti social behaviour. Sometimes you heard the odd car practising their drifting on some of the roundabouts in the distance biggrin Easy access to the canal, fleet pond area and various park Heathlands.

That sounds fine - I'm used to seeing the results of doughnut practice in Bracknell Forest, although never near enough to hear it!

There's really nothing wrong with Farnborough or any of it's surroundings. People jump in say oooh aaah, its this or that, the reality is it is absolutely fine for what it is. We have lived in nearby there now since 2015, previously was Woking way which also used to get slated. Woking is nice, would gladly move back as the town is being and has been developed a lot since we moved there 16 years ago. Ideal commuter belt too.

Cove, or Farnborough is the next major station out, so equally good commuter belt. Much cheaper than Woking though as it is not quite as green, there are more industrial and commerce units spread about. However, they are fairly isolated on their own plots and there are still ample green parts, parks and the canal as well as woodlands to go to. It's quite good value for Surrey actually. We moved where we are ( Mytchett environs ) purely for schools, however have found a strong neighborhood feel, parents and kid groups abundant and willing to help, plenty to do. As a parent of young kids it is ideal. Much better than where we were down the road in Pirbright, only 2 pubs and a butcher, hideous property prices and snobby neighbours "ok yaa" ing into their Prosecco every Friday night.

Its a nice combo of practicality and amenities in the area, lots of shops / businesses if required but also good outdoor space and excellent driving roads if you know where to find them. We will stay here some time before a big move to the country, the only thing holding us back is our kids currently. What we generate on the house price of our current sizeable house will set us up nicely for a slight downsize to a 2/3 bed country abode in the sticks in the future, so I am prepared to forgo the luscious dappled green leaves whistling in the undisturbed afternoon sun for now whilst the kids are educated and grow into their teens.

Crime is rife everywhere at the moment because of "covid" ( great excuse for everything I find ) so can't really accurately compare that presently. The Covid excuse really grates on me, South West Rail STILL running a reduced service now cos of "Covid", restaurants and take-aways on half menus cos of "Covid", most call centres full of technical difficulties and cutting you off every 10 mins cos of "Covid". It's time people sorted themselves out in my opinion.

I lived in Farnborough for about 20 years. The army moved me there, and we bought our own place and stayed rooted there when I was posted away. I'd say 'Armchair_Expert' has described it pretty well.

I'd never have moved there out of choice, it would never have appeared on my Radar, but there was no desperate rush to move away either. Schools were good (at least up in Fernhill ward) and the 6th Form college has a decent reputation and got both my sons onto decent Uni courses. That was the main reason we stayed, along with my wife having a job at a "leading Radiology department" in Frimley Park Hospital.

As an outdoorsy person I really enjoyed it. The canal, plenty of green spaces (much of it MOD owned), and nice rural roads to cycle on a virtual hop, skip, and jump away. I managed a couple of cycling trips to London via the Basingstoke Canal, Wey Navigation, and Thames path, and also a few triangular rides to Guildford and back via canal, navigation, the Christmas Pie Trail and Blackwater Valley route.

I've moved to Bournemouth now, back to my wife's home town. I wouldn't head back to Farnborough in a hurry, but I do still miss elements of it. Not least being able to get the train up for gigs in London and being able to get back again without having to stay over.

Cant really help much with what it is like now. But my parents lived down church lane for many years, its where I grew up. Lived there between 1972 and 1986. Mum and Dad moved out in 1998. As a kid it was a nice place to live very friendly little community. The church can cause parking issues during weddings. And in those days the plough and horses was run by Dick Whittington, never saw his cat though.

I left the area and moved to Fleet in 1986, since moved to the north Wales border so my up to date knowledge is slim

Farnborough gets a bad rep mostly because the town centre is crap. If you want loads of shops and endless pubs and restaurants and nightlife it won't be for you, but it's easy to get to any other neighbouring towns like Woking, Camberley, Guildford. You can get most of what you would need but if you wanted a day out shopping you wouldn't go to Farnborough. The same applies to any of the smaller outlying villages around these towns. Before Farnborough I was in Frimley Green.

Thanks for all the replies. thumbup

I thought it seemed like a decent area and what you've said seems to back that up.

Just hoping the moving process goes smoothly now - I'll finally have a garage again! smile

Woking is an excellent place to live. No reason to go there otherwise though! I grew up at the Horsell end.

I have a nephew in Farnborough who I see at least twice a year. Granted restrictions were in place so not for a year. I have driven through Cove a few times and liked it. I wouldn’t mind living in Farnborough but the traffic in rush hour can be a pain I hear. Seems nice enough with all the usual amenities. Costco, Tesco, Asda etc.

Totland has quietened down a lot over the last decade - mainly because all the trouble making youngsters have grown up, left, been sent to jail etc etc. It now has quite a large immigrant population who are, by and large, more law abiding than the natives.

Still get the odd murder though smile

And The Thatch Cottage pub is re-opening after being closed for over two years - so Cove is getting better.

I live around 2 miles from Thatch Cottage, in the correct direction too. Are you nearby?
