My 2004 Focus 1.8 diesel estate is making a strange noise which is consistent with road speed but gets noticeably louder at 50mph,it seems to be coming from the drivers side front of the car,it can best be described as a humming/thrumming type of sound, there doesn't seem to be any play in any of the wheel bearings,i put the car on axle stands and ran it in top gear and the noise seems to be coming from where the drivers side drive shaft enters the gearbox, also there was a noticeable shaking/juddering occurring so iam leaning towards a dodgy cv joint perhaps?
Also I should mention that when driving on a road and I veer to the left so that the weight on the drivers side wheel is lessened the noise stops until I steer in a straight line again.
Any ideas? cheers

Sometimes certain tread pattern tyres start to hum at speed when the tread gets low.
My old 02 focus did the same firstly on Avon tyres and again with Pirelli tyres.
Both times it sounded like wheel bearing hum

Tyre noise could well be the culprit.
