Anyone advise pls my mondeo won't start dials go crazy

Hi guys hope I'm posting in the right place, don't wanna go straight to a garage cause when they see a woman they see £s!
Iv a 2ltr diesel mondeo 56 plate was out and about as usual got in car turned the key all my dials went crazy and car wouldnt even turn over, left it 10 mins it started fine problem is more often now, any suggestions pls, the battery was fitted 3 yrs ago so not sure it's that but iv twice had a noise like the starter jammed a while ago, could this be linked??
Any advise appreciated xx

In the dim and distant past I had a similar vintage Mondeo diesel and when I experienced this it was down to a knackered battery so worth checking that first...
Did the average mpg and trip odometer reset when the dials went crazy?

Failing battery - or at least exactly the same symptoms as when batteries failed on my Mondeos. Three years is a bit of a short life for a battery, unless it was a very cheap one, or under-specified.
To avoid being over-charged for a new one, check out the price for a battery by entering your reg. number on the Euro Car Parts website.

I do not believe it is the battery as all the lights on the dash are still bright as they should be, iv tried starting it today all the lights are there on the dash but turn the key and absolutely nothing it's like there's no engine in the car lol
So my next question would be where's the earth wire? And yes I really am clueless!!!

Just because the dash lights are bright doesn't mean the battery isn't faulty! The dials doing odd things like you describe is what happens the first time you turn on the ignition after having the battery dis-connected on a Mondeo so you may just have a bad connection so checking the condition/security of the battery terminals is the first thing I would do. Do you know anyone with a multimeter who could check the battery voltage for you?

Your battery is dead. If it's only 3 years old, then the next question is why is it dead? It might be worth having a good look at the alternator and belt etc as a good place to start.So my next question would be where's the earth wire? And yes I really am clueless!!!

Battery isn't dead, the OP has said he can go back to it 10 minutes later after it has been playing up and it will start OK then. If the battery was dead, that wouldn't happen. Its a bad connection somewhere, most likely at one end or the other of the battery earth lead or possibly an other earth lead.Look at the battery to see which is the negative side - the wires should be black NOT Red. Make sure the bolt securing them to the battery is tight.
Next, follow the big black wire downwards, it should be attached to the car somewhere under the bonnet with another bolt or screw (The earth connection).
Check this is tight also.
