MK4 Mondeo 2.0 TDCi Engine malfunction light and power loss

Hoping someone here may be able to help. Twice now when driving along my car (2013 Mondeo 2.0 TDCi 140bhp) the engine malfunction light has come on and the car has lost power and seemed unwilling to rev. On both occasions pulling over, shutting it all off for a minute and then restarting has resulted in the car driving fine after.
On both occasions the car was on a dual carriageway with the cruise control on. Both occupations were actually in a similar place and after a similar length of driving - an hour and 20ish from journey start.
Any thoughts?
It may not be related but occasionally when I start the car it dies almost immediately but is always fine when restarted and given a quick rev.
I have wondered about stuff like EGR valve of DPF but I know little about the diesel engines.

Have you had any other warning lights such as ABS and traction control? These lights coming on will disable cruise control and also the anti stall feature which will result in the car being more likely to cut out when pulling away with a cold engine.
The DPF has two sensor pipes which are prone to splitting which can cause a malfunction light to come on.
Other than that, get a code reader.

I have a code reader but alas when the car starts up again all is fine and no codes are being stored. So I'd need to run one the whole time in the hope of catching it.
The cruise control continues to work when the engine malfunction warning comes on. No other warning lights come up.
I know the MK3 engine EGRs are notorious so wondered about taking the valve off and giving it a good clean. With the two incidents being a few thousand miles apart it may be hard to know when the problem is cured I fear.
Cam position sensor is one I had wondered about for the issue where it dies after starting.
Does anyone know when these engines do a DPF regen? I'm struggling to find a reliable answer.

Hi all, I have a 2008 mondeo. When I've the revs get to over 3k the elm has come on with no other message but I have had the traction control light come on with the elm light at other times. My car has occasionally cut out when I've started it from cold??? My car feels like it has a bit of hesitation when i put my foot down and I'm not sure what's causing it. Does anyone have any ideas on this??
I have a 2012 Mondeo 2.0 Diesel Business Edition and was getting a loss of power to start with when driving off which was probably "Limp Home Mode" and the display would say Engine Malfunction. It would also be prone to stall easily. After a few minutes power would return but the warning on the display stayed on and also the engine fault light.
The problem was found to be the air intake pipe to the air filter box had come off slightly. On refitting the pipe the error disappeared but the engine fault light stayed on.
I reset this by inserting the key into the ignition, turn the vehicle on for about a second, and then off for about a second. I repeated this twice more and it had reset the light on the dash.
Hope this may help someone else out.

Many thanks for the post that was exactly what the issues was on my 2013 Mondeo. After a battery change at unmentionable motoring spares group, the car ran fine until I jet washed the car I originally thought it was that and water had gotten into the electrics. But after reading your post I opened the bonnet and there the problem lay. Jubilee clip not even tight.
