As someone else suggested, is it not an ambient temperature warning lamp?

Normally amber at 4 degrees, and red when it drops to 0 degrees

Going back to this post it seems like you have a problem with your alarm/immobiliser system or wiring which is causing the alarm light to be a bit erratic.

That light is the PATS light (passive anti theft) The light flashes like most cars to tell you the system is active. As in you cars security system. That light tells you what the system is doing and flashes a certain number of times to tell you that there is a fault with the system. If the system is functioning normally the light will flash every 2 seconds when the ignition is switched off.
Many thanks for such a lovely reply. It has no pattern to the flashing, sometimes stops and starts again, continuous ... it seems unpredictable.

am i the only one with a focus? lol
No, there are others! Got an '04 model though.

I wondered if it was the 'fuel low' light. That would flash as you drive as the fuel sloshes about, but also at rest while the fuel level settles, and possibly due to driver/passenger movement before the ignition is switched off.
Because it doesn't come on continuously at first, the red flash catches your eye as intended but by the time you look at the instrument panel it has gone again.

Just a thought...

So it's just a single red dot, flashing away?

in that case, i'd guess it's part of the Alarm system.
Try locking the car up, and seeing if it flashes away by itself.

Make sure you do that right now, this very instance...

The red light that flashes between the indicator lights, kind of at the top of where the speedo & Rev counter circles meet is the Alarm/Immobiliser on my ST. It flashes when it's locked up.
This is the only red light in that vacinity IIRC so it does sound like an alarm issue of some kind.

The outside temp warning symbol that has been mentioned is a big snowflake within the Rev counter that is either yellow or red, doesn't sound like it's that.

Other warnings, such as low washer fluid etc, tend to be displayed with yellow lights and text where the trip computer display is.

Yep, this is the correct answer. Same as my 09 Focus. Definately an alarm/imobiliser problem. If it has the onboard computer, scroll down to menu then access messages & it will tell you the fault.
