Hi,

I've finally decided that the next car is going to be a Mondeo St 155 TDCI. But as with any car I buy these days, I like to consult you chaps on here for anything I should look out for when buying?

I've just been reading a thread on the ST220 for a lot of info.

Does the ST155 have the same sound system with the aux input in the glove box?

Is there anything that is a major weakness on these cars that I need to seriously check out before buying? I'd heard stories of the flywheel being a little bit fragile? How can you tell this if it is a weakness?

Hey,

I downsized from a 330i due to buying house etc.. best buy i made. The fuels great and although the power isn't no where the same the st tdci does shift. Unless your locking horns with a 200bhp sports car then i'd def recommend this as a sensible buy.

I've had mine for 4 years and until i read your post i've just found out my car has an aux input for mp3 ha ha cheers for that!

good buy, depreciations bad if bought brand new. I sought this car out and one day i went into see a guy at ford and he said the st tdci flew out the showroom after sir clarkson raved about it.

Fair few horror stories of issues with the Dual Mass Flywheel/clutch/starter motor, as common with most Mk3 mondeos. Bit better with the later 6 spd gearbox but there are still issues there.

Obviously being a new fangled diesel engines there are issues with reliability of Turbos and the EGR valves clogging up, any hesitancy or dodgy coloured exhaust smoke I would likely walk away. Other than that its a diesel mondeo with slightly stiffer suspension, not going to set the world alight but should provide some fun on the way.

Glad to have returned the favour for the quick review by telling you about the little aux input! So thats a yes it does have one then.

Will try and aim for the later 6 speed box model then if I can. What year did they change over to the 6?

I'd been toying with the idea of a few cars including a 330ci, or even the ST220, but then thought about the economy side of things, and I have a 'fun' car for the performance. But then I wanted something that was a compromise rather than being totally powerless.

Going to look a a few next week hopefully so will keep an eye/ear out for the things mentioned above.

All ST TDCI's will be 6 speeders as they came after the 2004 facelift which is when the box was introduced.

We brought one and i must say that i have been impressed with it. Brakes are a bit wanting but other than that i like it

Was going to get one as a second car but decided against it due to far too many issues. Rough running following PCM update, DMF failure, EGR issues, injector issues(circa £1K to fix). Not the best engine by a long shot, plenty out there with no problems no doubt but all the above were being posted week in week out of owner forums. Watch out for rear bumper dropping & snapping the mounts too.

Is it fair to say a high spec 2.0TDCI-130 with a remap would be a better choice? Say, a Titanium X or Ghia X?

You might as well get the ST220, it's cheaper to buy and doesn't have Diesel problems that will most likely totally offset the savings you make on fuel.

Personally i wouldn't touch any MK3 Diesel. The engine/management in the Mk4 is supposed to be so much beter(injector fails it shuts down ONE cylinder, unlike the old one that would shut down the LOT!!). Looking at the bigger picture unless you are doing seriously high miles i'd get the 220.

I suppose I could go for the ST220 then. Wont be doing too many miles, and I used to have a Cougar with the smaller incarnation of the V6.

Is there anything to look for on those?

Depends on year, RUST(yes RUST!) on the door bottoms on early cars-known fault. Dropping rear bumper on anything >2004. Rear sunframe bushes are weak (common Mk3 issue). Brakes feel weak but work well (pedal feel is wooden IMO, sometimes you st yourself but that is because i'm used to the old Mk1 which has much sharper feel). Bottom end issues can happen at low miles but that is pot luck. (same with DMF/clutch).

The brakes sound similar to the 355 then, they never feel that great, and squeal a lot too, but they seem to do the job.

Is there a cure for if the bumpers start to drop? Can you replace the mounts or anything?

Been talking to someone else about the tdci's and they've said similar things, so I reckon its worth the extra in petrol and insurance for the same of not haveong an expensive diesel engine cock up!

Focus ST front calipers seem to help the brake issue. Must admit I though tthe brakes were OK, but after changing to Focus ST calipers, larger disks and braided hoses, it's considerably keener to haul up.

Rear bumper? Yep... buy the foam pads fitted to earlier cars.

I did a how to on another forum re:the bumper with pictures, i fixed my brand new car in 07 before it dropped(Ford wouldn't accept there was an issue!). The pads are pricy but close the gap between the lights & bumper, if you can get a finger in it has dropped, open boot & check mounts, if lucky they will be OK-fitting the pads will work. If they are broken then it would need replacing, you do not want to know the cost of the flimsy cover!!!
