So ordered a nice matching set of rainsport 3s online through tyre leader on saturday.... all in stock online. Got to monday morning and found an email saying they have cancelled the fronts due to having no stock. I asked them to cancel the rears as I need them all by this saturday before i drive to spain. They say it cannot be cancelled as they are in transit (from germany no less), and i shall have to refuse delivery (and pay £25) or return myself at my own cost. Due to this i may as well accept them and source the fronts elsewhere.

long story short..... can i put different tyre brands/types on the front as to the rear or will the grip characteristics mess with the driving?

There will be those who say that you want all 4 the same, and in an ideal world this may be true, especially if you do a lot of track work.
In the real world, I don’t expect you will have a problem running different tyres on the front to the back. Many people do.

You may still be able to get some rainsport 3’s in time. Try mytyres, Camskill & Black circles. Good luck.

Try www.protyre.co.uk

I would always go for a matching set if possible..

Many of us (me included) have to use V rated tyres on the front with Z rated (more commonly now W rated) tyres on the rear if you still use the 15" / 16" combination. These will undoubtedly have slightly different compounds but I at least had the same make front and back.

All tyres are now sold with grip performance, wear and road loudness ratings so at least try to make them similar, the first one especially! Who produces the ratings I don't know but you have to hope they're approximate. whistle

The ratings are given by the manufacturer so unless they are the same brand, means bugger all!

Are there many people that have changed to 16"/16" combo? Realised i should stress that this is on a 93 Chimaera. What is the benefit of doing this? Hopefully i will be able to get some similar to the rears soon.

I thought the advice was to always have the same tread across the fronts or backs, but not necessarily on front and back.

Got new tyres on my Chimaera last year. Haven’t checked if they still do them recently, but these were from TVR parts, so they should hopefully still be doing them. They are Toyos in the correct speed ratings, made especially for TVR parts. They also have the TVR logo on the sidewalls smile

TVR Parts tyres

Not that I'm being pernickety but should they be showing one of these chart thingies? ......
