Hi my local garage tells me they have to remove the body on my TVR to change the manifold gaskets!
Is this true? Sounds a bit extreme

That's not right unless they have managed to snap one of the bolts nearest to the bulkhead, and even then there are other options. I also think that in order to get the body off you you need to take the manifolds off first anyway as one of the many jobs before you even think about lifting the body.

Try a different garage. A TVR specialist would be ideal but any good old school garage should be able to do this job. Where are you in the country?

I changed my manifold gaskets on my drive using nothing more than few different shaped spanners. Granted some of the bolts are hard to get to and you can only turn the spanner a quarter turn at a time for some of the bolts.

From memory, the original bolts need a 9/16 spanner. I put fresh and slight longer bolts back in with a 14mm head.

There are also two sizes of gasket (internal hole is either large or small) and my 500 needed the larger hole gasket, which I think is the same across the TVR range.

Absolute garbage and even if a bolt sheared engine removal far easier than taking the body off rolleyes like suggested go elsewhere its BS
