Also, there are more cars to upkeep.

Got two back exhaust boxes to put on the range Rover this week. Lorraine‘s mini MOT expires tomorrow so that’s a check over and visit to the garage. Number one son taking the motorhome tomorrow for a few days. He’s going away with three girls, hmm. That needs a good check over after its two weeks of hard life through France, Switzerland and Germany.

Lucky I’m retired!

Perhaps the most telling comment about the original Speed 12 was from Peter Wheeler, after testing it up and down Bristol Avenue a couple of times :

"I was wrong : you CAN have too much power".

If I could have just one fun car, not the amazingly practical comfortable not slow Volvo which will probably be the last car I own… it would have to be a ‘60’s Shelby Cobra…

But they did grace a few racetracks testing it with the speed 12 at Brands as I was there. Around 2000 and it was a special looking thing back then as a racecar. If it went as good as it looked on track it would have been a massive success but that was miles from reality, it did act as a very good publicity stunt though and suggested great things.
Just needed some investment……
It raced in the GT showcase event supporting f1 at silverstone one year.

It utterly monstered everything, would clearly have been neutered / restricted had it continued in the series.

Rose-tinted choice, if I may say so.

I had a Mini when I was 17, and my dad had a Cooper S which he rallied and on which I learnt to drive when I was 15.
For my 21st we loaded up the Mni with everything we needed and spent a month touring Europe in it.

Move forwards 35 years and a friend asked me to find a BMC Mini and get it sorted and MOT'd ready for her son's 17th birthday.
I did as asked and then set off one Friday afternoon to drive it from Cambridge to mid-Wales.
Appaling traffic, pouring rain, after ages stuck on the M6 I realised I could go no further in that cramped driving position, turned left at junction 8 onto the M5 and pulled off the motorway asap.
Onto a petrol station forecourt, opened the door, put a foot out, stood up and fell over. Both legs had gone into total spasm from the driving position.

So not my choice of past glory car. Just a car of very fond teenage memories. It was amazing what you could do in a Mini when young. wink

From my car history to have as a car for the rest of my days, I would have the Renault 25 I drove for 250,000 miles back in the mid-late 1980s. Really comfortable, quick enough, predictable handling, reliable. Sorry to be boring.

From the 60s the car I always loved the look of was the Triumph TR6. And I still do. Geezer down the road has one. It still looks the mutts to me.

I prefer the looks of the 5 to the 6 but good choice.

I'd never really thought about it before but our 5 cars have a total age of 124! yikes
- The three cars in my garage are collectively 175 years old.
- The red Speed 12 is a wonderful thing, that orange thing is dreadful
- A Lotus Cortina Mk1 would be a great addition to my garage (yes I know it's Cortina Lotus but back in the '60s no one cared) biggrin

I thought the Lotus Cortina was the Mk1 as it was built by Lotus. The Mk2 was the Cortina Lotus because it was built by Ford?

Anyway, I'd have a 62 clap door Lincoln Continental drophead.

Or a Jensen Interceptor.

I have a MK1 MX5, I think it would have to be that.
The TVR is a brilliant car and I love it, the power, the noise but the MX5 just feels so right. In addition you can have fun at slow speeds, throw the luggage rack on and fit all the camping gear on it.

I got as far as a 1966 998cc Mini Cooper Mk 1 but then went onto a 1600GT Cortina followed by a 1600E Cortina.

Loved all of them and would have any of them again.

Not according to Wikipedia, and I assume a Lotus Cortina aficionado had been through that with a fine toothed comb wink

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotus_Cortina

"Lotus Cortina is the commonly used term for the Ford Cortina Lotus, a high-performance sports saloon, which was produced in the United Kingdom from 1963 to 1970 by Ford in collaboration with Lotus Cars. The original version, which was based on the Ford Cortina Mark 1, was promoted by Ford as the "Consul Cortina developed by Lotus", with "Consul" later being dropped from the name."
