Hi all,
Today changed the oil and filter on my Chim 500 and faced a problem which I tried to research on this forum but did not find a definitive solution.
In short, the filter does not fit! The filter is just a tad taller and I cannot tread it because of the chassis tubes.
The filter I used is BOSCH P3251 (recommended by one of the TVR dealers), which looks alike UFI 23.127.02, and is a little shorter than Mann W930/20 and others mentioned by people on this forum.
As a solution I used shorter filter UFI 2311401, used on Speed Six engines, which the previous owner used before. Also another TVR dealer recommended to use a similar sized BOSCH 0 451 103 274.
I suppose I am not the first one to bring up this problem, but how do you fit a taller Mann W930/20 filter when a much shorter one BOSCH P3251 doesn't fit? May be it is a Rover 5.0L engine problem only? What do you recon about fitting a much smaller Speed Six filter, oil flow and etc., do you think any problems will follow? I heard it is too small for the engine, but how do you fit a larger one? Puzzled... 🤷‍♂️
Thanks

Indeed, the 500 needs a shorter filter.

I use a Mann W916/1.

I would guess that if it's been okay up until now on a short filter it will be fine with another?

Mann 914/2 rings a bell as the filter to use?

May also be worth having a quick check to make sure your engine mounts are not on the way out.

Mann W916/1 is specked 1 mm shorter than BOSCH P3251 which I tired to fit unsuccessfully. May be this 1 mm is exactly what is needed… I will give it a try next time.
Mann 914/2 looks like UFI 2311401 or BOSCH 0 451 103 274 which I successfully fitted. It is about 25-26 mm shorter. I guess then that there is nothing ‘in between’ available. Agree that if it worked before should be ok, but Domenic from TVR Power wrote me that it is ‘too small’ for the engine, that is why I am a bit sceptical. Anyway with my yearly mileage should not be a problem.
Checking the engine mounts is a good tip!
Thank you all! Safe driving!

Why would a 5 litre need a shorter oil filter? it makes no sense. As I see it, the only time a RV8 TVR would need a shorter filter would be if a sandwich take off plate was fitted for an oil cooler. When I fitted an oil cooler (two), I didn't like the idea of smaller filter so fitted a remote filter housing.

This.

The 500 does not need a shorter filter .. as SteveD says above, check that your engine is in the right place ..

After seeing the latest replies I suddenly remembered that I needed the shorter filter because of the oil cooler sandwich plate - forgot about that!

Has someone fitted an oil cooler take-off on the filter housing? Those restrict the fitting space and need a shorter filter

There is definitely an oil radiator just below the coolant radiator. So when you try to screw the filter on, the filter bumps against the chassis tubes. It feel that it needs to be just a tad shorter, like 5 mm or so…
So you say, the filter I put on is correct? It is about 70 mm tall

So did I get it right, that you are able to fit Mann W916/1 with an oil cooler sandwich plate on, or you fitted a smaller filter?

I use W916/1 in conjunction with an oil cooler sandwich plate. I guess the sandwich plates can/do vary in thicknesses?
