Just got a price from Dover to Calais of £95.00 return I think I'll do that and have to drive further in the griff (hardship).

exactly what I'm going to do tonight. I went Porstmouth/Cherbourg this year for £220, they now want £302 for 2002 (robbing b@stards).

SeaFrance with do Dover/Calais for £95 or P&O for £107.

Robbing B@stards you are right. A friend has a house in the Loire and found suddenly his crossing cost almost doubled!
I think they are really now aiming for day trips, you can get a 24 hour return with window cabin both ways for 85GBP, thats less than 'Club Class' for 3 people.

Dover to Calais crossings are good and give you a chance for a decent thrap down the coastal road, but when you add it up.. (i live in Reading so Dover is about 100 miles more than Portsmouth)

Dover Calais Crossing £100, 450 Miles (Calais LE Mans rtn) £70 fuel,Overnight Hotel for Thursday / Sunday £80

= Makes £250 and 6/7 hours of motorway driving.

Much better to be 'in on the overnight ferry...

Britanny ferry to St Malo is like the P&O ferry, it is just the Caen one which is

Ok - gonna book my tickets tomorrow.

...

Le Houx or Maison Blanche? I've heard good things about both.

There's a group of 7 cars, 15 people..

I'm going on Thursday afternoon crossing, should take about 4.5hours (as last year) about £70-80 of fuel but no Hotel just drive straight down there and soak up the atmosphere.

I took the afternoon ferry to Calais two years ago. 4 hour drive to Dover, ferry over then drove straight down to Le Mans.

After several hours of very fast motoring I decided to to stop and try to get a bunk (3am) - saw some Cerberas parked up as a roadside hotel. No room, so had a quick black coffee from flask and set off again. Soon back up to 3 figure speeds. Oh look, someone else still driving (first moving vehicle for an hour or so, France is one big empty place!), but what is wrong with those headlights approaching? Jeez, they're on my side of the road! Whoops, no they're not - I'm on his! Onto the grass at 100mph (was that flash past the window a lamppost?), lorry horn blaring as he tore past, bit of fishtailing, where the hell am I?, come to a halt sideways on the tarmac, with heart rate at 200bpm. Very surprised that the aftershock (the wife) didn't kill me, but she admitted she hadn't realised either.

Beware, extreme tiredness, foreign roads and fast cars can be a very lethal mix!

I would say Houx. better facilities and 24 hour guards.Plus there is more trees if it pees down like last year!!

Last year we camped in Bleu camping and was charged £10.00 I've stayed in Tribune Le Houx and Maison Blanche on other occasions and I was really surprised how good Bleu compared. I did have the use of a camper (shower & loo) so I was ok in that respect. If you can stand not having a shower for a couple of days it may be a cheap option?

bleu is not really a campsite, it is a car park where you can pitch tents.

A couple of years back when we stayed there it was a pain. No facilities at all, no marked pitches [every time you went out in the car some other fu***r had put his tent and car in your parking space] and to cap it all a few of the tents got 'burgled' as security was lax.

Guys,

Having sent a fax to the ACO yesterday lunchtime asking for camping places and grandstand tickets, when am I likely to get confirmation that my order is accepted and/or that the tickets I want are available and haven't sold out?

Sixspeed

I sent a fax to them at the start of last week and they sent me a letter back at the end of the week saying they will confirm bookings at the start of the year (because they haven't got the final price list yet).

we did not hear a peep from the ACO the other year until March, and then they could only offer our last choice.

IT is worth joining the TVr car club as they have a large allocation of pre-reserved tickets for members and it saves all of the faffing around with calls to France.

Have just booked my Le Mans crossing (22nd consecutive year!) with SeaFrance and got a really good deal. Book and pay before the 9th Jan and a 5 day return is £95 for a car and up to 9 people! If you want to set off before 07.00 and return after 20.45 it's another £20 cheaper. The number is 08705 711 711. (If you're making a longer trip off it the standard return is still only £129!). See you all there in June - Camping Houx.

I presume thats a Dover - Calais crossing.

Whats the best prices anyones had for Portsmouth - Cherbourg crossings, or any that side.

Maybe aswell as Pistonheads stickers we should include our user names so people can put faces/cars to names, don't really know whether this is a good idea or not
