Surely it's the manufacturer's responsibility to arrange recall/checks? They must have records of which dealers/individuals they supplied.
Agreed... but if i was a supplier & was aware of a problem scratchchin

ETA: One of the best way of getting this out to most people that have fitted them would've been via Media/PH..............

Had this problem as well and only found out by the car failing it's m.o.t. they were replaced free of charge 2 weeks ago. However if gaz knew they had a dodgy batch they should have notified people to check their shocks just to be on the safe side
My front shocks had also cracked across the top as well as the bottom, they were so bad that i was advised not to drive the car

update on this.
I've just got back from picking up my new gold pro's and were told that this upgrade was free of charge and that GAZ will be recalling all of the affected shocks so a big thumbup for them for the way they delt with me

That's good news. Gaz were equally superb with me and replaced my failed rear units free of charge, but my fronts are still original.

If there is a general recall then I may request my fronts be replaced too as a precaution.

Mine were fitted 25 May 2007 so are out of 2 year guaranty, so what happens then?
I will have a service on 12 October and have them inspected then.

Derek (Absolutely Shocks) has already said that Gaz are replacing for free regardless of whether in or out of warranty.

I have just removed my 18 month old gaz golds after they started squeeking, to send them in for a repair under warranty only to find this:

the bottom joint has cracked through on three out of the four shocks, this i was told was due to a faulty batch of bushes that were too large and forced the alloy to crack.
Now Gaz were brilliant even before they new about the cracking they said they would repair without question,
this is a safety warning as you can't see these cracks unless you get right underneath and look from inboard towards the bottom of the shock.
GO AND CHECK YOUR SHOCKS!!!!
(Copy of Advert in Sprint magazine)
Product Safety Check

Owners of all TVR models with the old style Gaz Gold shock absorbers fitted to their cars are advised that some units were fitted with wrong sized bushes, this can cause the aluminium to crack in extreme cases.

You should immediately ask your TVR service centre to perform a safety check on the car and any faulty units will be replaced with the new Gaz Gold Professional shock absorbers.

This safety check does not apply to Gaz classic or Gaz Gold Professional, which are not affected, the priod in question is around 2007/2008.

Just as an aside, Gaz Gold have been fitted to other cars than TVR. My Corrado for a start, Golfs, the GTM Libra kit car, all sorts. So a mention in Sprint, though laudable, isn't going to inform everyone. In fact it isn't even going to inform all TVR owners (I've not renewed by membership with the TVRCC for example).

That's not meant as a criticism; just an observation.

Do they all use the same bushings? AIUI the fault was forcing in wrong sized bushes..

..with a sneaky 'do not torque suspension until it is loaded' thrown in for good measure, always a good dig at the just make it efin tight any efin how brigade hehe

Quite right to point this out but Jag bushes are only used on TVR, some Golf models and Dax Cobras. Dax use steel loops and we only sold two VW race kits in this year.

With regard to Sprint advert, Gaz are just as interested in ensuring that all the TVR indies are happy to carry out safety checks for the owners and they have been asked in writing to assist.

What about Gaz direct sales or via a supplier ?

And as Richard asked

I presume this is in the next/next issue ??

If it was a known problem why the delay ? I'm not talking about the print delay !! I mean why hasn't it been put on forum(s) when it first came to light ??

May be a daft question, but is there supposed to be a hole next to the suspension mount?

Good question. The car is 13 years old so it could be rusted though. I'll get it looked at and possibly welded when I next have the car in.

I had some Gaz Gold Pros pro. fitted a few months ago to my Griff and it turned out that the front springs were defective. I posted on the Griff forum and Derek at AB shocks replaced them with silicon chrome ones and arranged to have them fitted by a local TVR inde (they were originally fitted by an inde some distance away). I'm going to post about getting the best out of the set up though.

yes Agreed ....

Also that it appears to have been a known fault to the Manufacturer/some suppliers for some 2 years & it wasn't brought to customer attention before !!
