Hi all,

Its not over, I got a letter today from VINCI.

The letter seems to say they will only continue my account if I send them details of my French bank account.

I do not have a French bank account!

Enclosed was my original registration form that I sent them before my trip.

By the look of it I don't think they were satisfied with my IBAN & BIC.

I also received an email today that says they are charging me 32 Euros for my first months usage!

Well it did work twice before it packed up so I expect this is about right.

Here is the translated email.

"Hello

Your bill toll in July 2010 in the amount of € 32.20 is available in your area subscribers, under "My Invoices".

To ensure the security of your information, consultation of your bills is strictly personal and requires authentication.

To access: vinci-autoroutes.com
Then, simply enter your customer number - ??????? - and your personal password"

I might even pay them wink

This whole Télépéage transponder saga turned out to be a compete joke.

Its such a shame, I was using my friends one earlier this year and it was fantastic.

And to think we welcome the French to enjoy our roads for free whenever they want to wreck their suspension on our lovely potholes laugh

I bought a transponder from APRR end July cost: 10Euros plus 1.50Euros per month when I use it plus toll charges. It worked fine all the way from Calais down to S.France and back, no problems. The charges are put onto my Credit Card. Its ideal if you are travelling alone as you don't have to get out of the car to go to the toll booth, and it is much quicker than queuing to pay. I'm glad I bougt it!

so, supporting what we probably already know, I got this reply from Alis:
someone from alis said:
I have received the message about the Liber-t tag. For the moment, it is only possible to subscribe if you have a french bank account. Indeed, in the future, with the SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) direct debit, it will be possible. Therefore, today, I can not give you an application date.
Has anyone got any experience of http://www.tolltickets.com/country/france/libert.a... they load the tolls by 9% but maybe that's the price of convenience?

I got one of these from SANEF last September and I didn't have a French bank a/c. There were no issues with my UK credit card either. It looks like it's all down to the retailer/agent you use. Now I'm just trying to work out how to return the thing and get the 30 Euros back. Any one know? By the way, it only worked when it wanted to but there again it is French. laugh

I've just ordered a Liber-t tag from Sanef UK - http://www.saneftolling.co.uk - for our summer hols in France this year. This should simply direct debit from my UK bank account.

That's uncanny JonathanT,

I was just starting to look at this again for my August trip to the Cote D'Azur.

As you may have already read above, I got burnt by VINCI last year.

But in principle the idea of having a transponder is still an excellent one for us right hand drive Brits, especially those of us like me in low sports cars and wives with short arms wink

Reading the site it explains I am looking at a total up front fee of 39.14€, of this 20.00€ is refundable when/if you return the transponder, much the same amount as I lost to VINCI last year furious

The direct debit from a UK bank account is the key to solving the problem, even though VINCI had my credit card details they disabled the transponder when they realised I had no French bank account.

The disabling of the device caused me to get stuck in a "T" lane twice with very embarrassing consequences confused

Finnally I lobed the dead transponder in the bin in utter disgust mad

I sort of understand why they did it, I guess they need an account to cover the possibility of my credit card going over it's limit, getting stopped because of fraud or such like.

Clearly someone at sanef has realised the English need a solution, and the new government regs in France that insist on a direct debit has forced their hand.

So it looks like they have created a UK subsidiary of sanef to solve the new rules, the site says they have implemented a dedicated UK IT system and Customer Service centre in Harrogate to enable UK motorists to pay in £GBP via direct debit.

BRILLIANT woohoo

I wonder if they will be redirecting Customer Service centre calls from Harrogate to Deli or Bangalore scratchchin

Any way my wife will be delighted to find out that this year she will not be leaping from my TVR at every toll to insert the credit card rolleyes

Well done sanef, & well done JonathanT clap

Do tell us all how you get on with the Liber-t tag.

Many thanks, Dave.

Sanef UK give great service.

I am still with Sanef in France using a UK credit card and they are great too. I am allowed to keep my account and use my UK card from a UK address. Plus the standard of service could teach a lesson to many English businesses.

Reading that really makes me wish I had chosen sanef not VINCI last year.

Oh well, sanef on a direct debit is better than VINCI on a credit card who then promptly disable the transponder so becomes nothing more than a paper weight.

You live & learn.

So, having set up my subscription on monday, the tag arrived on tuesday and is now activated on my account. Their email support has been very helpful and very reponsive. I'm very happy so far!

I'm planning to just keep this tag - I can lend it to friends and family - and pay the 6E annual service charge. If you return it and get the 20E refund, you'll need to pay another 39E upfront fee for the next one. In the future, you'll also be able to have multiple tags on one account too.

For those on "french tags with credit cards", the suggestion is that these will be phased out by the end of next year.

Can you post on here how you get on when you try to use your new SANEF transponder JonathanT

I was also burned by the VINCI scam the same as Chimpaholic last year, but as I got to Le Mans each year I would still like a transponder - especially as I seem to have an idiot navigator who without moving from his seat can lose a peage ticket in the space of 30 miles rolleyes

I can't believe ya didn't listen to the rest of us when we told you to get a Sanef one !

If you need a hand talking to them then shout, but when i did mine first time before i lived in france it was easy to do on-line, opened with a credit card and never had a problem since.

On-line services are excellent, has worked all over france without any issues and still does. That's why the rest of TPM bought Sanef ones . . . . Except you hehe

Ordered my sanef transponder a couple of days ago and it arrived this morning.

I have just activated it from my newly created sanef UK online account.

Couldn't be simpler.

Just go to:

https://www.saneftolling.co.uk/

I wont be able to report on if it works correctly until my trip in mid August but all the signs are good so far.

Thanks again to JonathanT for pointing us in the right direction thumbup

Read this last year before my jolly into France and used these guys www.tolltickets.com, totally painless, item arrived within days, operated no bother and I got what I paid for, returned the unit upon my return in pre paid envelope and they confirmed its return. Maybe slightly inflated but initial payment of 7.9 euro's, free rental for 21 days and 9% on the toll cost.
A terrific and efficient service

Interestingly I did consider them, but found scant feedback on them on the WWW so went down the Sanef route instead.

I wonder whos advice DID I take then?
I was told to get the VINCI one because they have offices near a lot of Peages and have one down near LM - out to the East by that big loopy entrance onto the toll road.
Its true, they DO have offices near a lot of Peages, but they aren't open half the blooming time rolleyes

I'd given up on having a transponder but after our run home after LM I think I'd like to be in control of my own destiny in future wink

Came across this old thread and thought I'd post an overdue update on my saneftolling.co.uk tag.

Basically, it worked flawlessly. The first toll was one of the 30km/h ones so there was some worry, but the tag just beeped and the barrier went up and we were on our way without stopping at all. There were no queues for the telepeage lanes too.

My account has been direct debited for the relevant amounts and that's it. Simples....

Yep me too, the Sanef transponder & direct debit system works a treat and totally solved my earlier VINCI frustrations.

You can manage it all online and they send you a warning email 10 days before they pull the funds.

Combine a Sanef Transponder with a bit of Google maps planning before you go, punch it all in your TomTom and you can just get on with enjoying your holiday.

The best bit for me was this years Le Mans Classic, I simply breezed through the tolls while my mates struggled with their credit cards, they had to play catch up every time hehe

If you drive through France (especially in a right hooker) the Sanef transponder & on-line direct debit account is a no-brainer thumbup
