Just a question for interest.

We were discussing the hassle of the old lucas PI setup the other night over beers.
I had 3 2.5PI saloons, all cheap as they were all very unreliable, and I changed them all over to carbs as the PI got worse. I even tuned a 2.5 lump and put it in a kit car after one failed its MOT, with 1.75 inch SUs on a modded manifold. I did get one set up properly once, and it was fabulous..... for about 3 months. All many, many years ago (1980's)

I wondered, because today, you could probably quite easily replace the injection with a DIY setup like the megasquirt, keep all the OE throttle bodies, and have a
reliable, fast, and probably economical PI engine (2500 or TR5,6). You would likely only need a bit of machining for modern injectors, plus a bit of pipework and wiring, and Robert's you father's brother...

It would even look [mostly] original....

has anyone gone this way ? Any Photos ??

Not done it myself but a number of people have, either to a saloon or PI TR6.

As you thought you can get the injector bosses in the PI throttle bodies re-machined to accept modern EFi injectors, then (very basically) with something like MegaSquirt/a MAP feed (just a vaccum feed so the MS can judge load)/crank trigger wheel (to tell MS where the engine is relative to TC)/a modern, actually reliable fuel pump.

The other option is to just use the PI throttle bodies as injector bosses by converting them to take EFi injectors, then removing the throttle butterflies/spindles and blanking the holes, then stick the single throttle assembly from a modern car on to the front end of the air box. This seems to be the more popular route as you get a throttle position sensor and don't need to find a MAP feed - and also see and end to trying to balance 3 throttle bodies and the random air leaks past the 40+ years of wear around the throttle spindles!

Thanks....

Yes, I didn't think about that. A single large throttle body already with a TPS sensor makes better sense, just need to blank off the various holes,
make sure they are sealed up well to a single tube to the throttle body (reuse the original ?).

No alignment or sticking throttles issues either... Neat.... Makes me want one again !!

Ive ed EFI on since 2000, originally got it just for the IGN side of things

wot car ye think,n of it going on
as some cars are easier than others due t,space under bonnet, an position of tank

If yer on PI noo, then injectors can be got that fit directly into the old PI manis wid need mods
if on carbs, then a bung on each intek near the head flange can be done, so it still looks sort of standard, ish

or, the injectors can be fitted inside the carbs, t keep it lookin even moer standard

Triumph actually wer gonna fit the injectors direct in heed, just above the inlet ports
this would allow the injector t,squrt right at the valve, there a few pics of this heed ont wed

its horses for courses an folks, own prefference
as every one does it different for different reasons

some pics an clips here, mines in thea a few times too, but wont say which.

Thanks Guys, interestin' stuff for an old Triumph L6 freak.....

I have also seen a neat job for the Ford V6 Essex, where the carb (38 DGAS) is stripped to a shell (keep the throttles) and a bracket replaces the top part with two 'mass' type injectors added. The original air pan and filter still fits.

Of course if you've got a Cologne then there's more options and injection mfolds to play with, including the OE Ford EFi.

Great photos !!
