Interesting that I didn't think of Golf GTI as a direct source of kryptonite for the Leyland sports cars but with hindsight the hot hatch was the teen dream from 1980 onwards
I wanted an XR3 or Renault 5 Turbo and had no interest in MG's or Triumphs at that time whatever.

My view is that the TR7 and particularly the coupe is a jaw dropping event for people under 30 who have no concept of context but simply see it as some sort of spaceship or exotic supercar.
I saw a gold one in Covent garden the other month and there was a queue of people waiting to get a photo next to it. It really did look like a design from outer space.
