Still watching this thread, still keen to do something with my own.. im now considering a TVR AJPv8 or the Lexus engine with a pair of Turbos! Who are you going to get to do the wiring on the lexus engine for you? the lexus is certainly a cheaper option if you got that full motor for £400!

Still working on this folks, spending all the time I have stripping underseal, paint & rust off. It's slow work as I'm only getting to work on the car a few days a month but it's making progress, it's the hard to get to areas that are left and it's not much fun!

Y282, the trailing arm mounts were not to bad but I have done some repairs around them. I'm also planning on putting some strengthening inside the car just behind those points to help handle the stress that goes through this area. I'll get some pics up when I get to that bit.

I've got a set of 4 pot princess calipers & vented discs all cleaned and painted up which are looking good. These are meant to be a decent upgrade, anyone had any experience of them? The red car has a conversion made up of classic range rover discs & calipers. The set up is a close fit inside the wheel but works really well. (it should do if it's designed to stop & Range Rover!)

Should be starting to strip down the lexus soon which I'm looking forward to!
My 7 had Princess callipers on solids. They were OK but much better after fitting the uprated master cyl/servo which I believe come from a Sherpa. The standard 7 master doesn't really move enough fluid for the 4 pots. The prinny 4 pots weigh a ridiculous amount & all unsprung! Personally these days I'd find a more modern ally callipered conversion.

OP did you fit the Range Rover brakes to the TR? We are currently restoring two of them - one already has the grooved V8 brakes but we are still looking for upgrades and currently have a battered RR classic 3.9 sat outside

Interesting re-build, good luck with the conversion.

I am fitting a Chimaera V8 with a Tremec T5 and have to sort out a mechanical drive to the speedo.

How will you manage your speedo drive?

Thanks

Hugh

Jammez,

What a cool looking engine.

A pal of mine mentioned something about a bellhousing to a Toyota manual gearbox from a Lexus engine being available. Might be something to consider.

I have looked at a small stepper motor to attach to the back of the speedo, will order one up and see if I can make it fit.

The electronics might be a wee bit of a challenge for me, but I know enough to say that bit can be made to work.

Cheers

Hugh

Great project! It may be worth having a peek at this, not my cup of tea but quite a project all the same: http://www.celicasupra.com/forums/showthread.php?5...

Jammez,

BL Motorsport moved the engine right back so that it was very close to the bulkhead, this helps greatly with the mounting of the radiator as well as improving the handling.

Need to see what that does for the gear lever position though.

Your garage looks a decent size, keep up the good work sir, I love the TR7, always have, always will, not owned one for 20 years or more but had four in the past, interesting route you are taking rather than the standard conversion of an RV8. I'd love to own another TR7 and I will once I've finished my house and garage renovation. will be a nice stable mate to the Lotus.

Good of you to take the time and post the pics and info. thumbup

...I have looked at the manual gearbox option & again it's all about the budget! The Supra turbo gearbox is pretty expensive before you even add the cost of the adapter plate. Might look at it again in the future or a newer version of the Lexus engine that has the switchable 5 spd auto...
You'd get away with the N/A Supra 'box (W58) on a standardish 1UZ. There are plenty of Soarers/SC400s in Australia and the USA running the W58. Mind you, even W58s are getting expensive now (ever since the drift community realised that Toyota made much better straight sixes than Nissan did and drove the price of R154s up).

If you intend tweaking the 1UZ you need an early version. The later engines (sometime in 1993 IIRC) have much weaker conrods.

Well I have to say that I'm somewhat green with envy at those 7's you've got I had one for years and went to Le Mans a few times in the late 80's and early 90's unfortunately it met rather a sad end when it went up in smoke in my garage. However I just love my TR6 but wouldn't mind another 7 for everyday use, very comfortable and easy car to use on a daily basis.
