Winter tyres vol 2
Discussion
Aye we've had a mental amount of snow here but our Disco Sport on all-seasons has been immense. I was out yesterday exploring a few of the smaller roads in Aberdeenshire and it was stunning in places with virgin snow covering everything. I now have a set of CC2's waiting to go on that I picked up from a friend a couple of weeks back who had sold his Disco Sport and had the tyres in the garage. 6.5mm of tread still left on them, so they should do a couple of years I hope.
My 535i Touring on the other hand is still under a blanket of snow as I never got around to buying all-seasons or winters for it

I can confirm that on country roads with sheet ice, CC3 Sport under braking and with ABS with struggle for adhesion.
To be fair there aren t many tyres without studs that grip on ice. Very deceptive to drive as it would pull away like it was on dry tarmac but any sort of speed had it drifting sideways on bends and any touch of the brakes had the ABS going bonkers.
There should be fines for motorists that get stuck in the snow in a similar way to it being an offence to knowingly breakdown on the motorway.
If you drive on snowy roads on summer tyres then you're a dick. A reckless and irresponsible dick.
I wonder why we've never adopted German or Swiss style rules around driving in winter.

Not sure about fines but I do think that all season tyres would suit the uk climate better than summers for the majority of people. If you drive on snowy roads on summer tyres then you're a dick. A reckless and irresponsible dick.

The next issue is ground clearance, I drove through drifting snow in my pickup today that cars just wouldn’t have been able to as they wouldn’t have the clearance no matter what tyres are fitted.

Some years ago, before All Seasons became a thing, the Tech Director of Continental said if average UK users had to choose one tyre for year round use then Winters would be the best choice.ChocolateFrog said:

Because this country is controlled by southerners who live in a metropolitan bubble. If you drive on snowy roads on summer tyres then you're a dick. A reckless and irresponsible dick.

Was looking forward to trying my new Alpines out but only a smattering of snow, despite being in England's statistically snowiest place (Western County Durham). Oh well.

I have never seen the snow this bad on main routes up here in Aberdeenshire. Not left the house since the 1st but all the photos I'm seeing of the A90 and A92 are an absolute mess because of the constant drifts.
Same here. Each year the council seem to try and outdo their piss-poor performance from the previous winter. Zero attempt to treat the roads whatsoever from what I can see.Somewhatfoolish said:

No idea what winter weather is like inn Germany, but generally we don't get that much real winter in most parts of the UK.If you drive on snowy roads on summer tyres then you're a dick. A reckless and irresponsible dick.

I'm in Northern Ireland and it's always cold and wet, but it's rare we get snow. There is a little out there at the minute though. And my Goodyear F1's are s
te as expected. Not so much an issue going forward etc, braking is the danger area. But snow and ice, maybe 2 weeks a year ? Usually just rain, rain and more rain.
Haven't been out in Dads Golf yet with the CC2's
