Winter tyres vol 2
Discussion
Put a set of Vredestein Quatrac 6 on the daily shed back in April and have been really impressed now that I've had a chance to do some driving in grotty winter road conditions.
Recently had a 50 minute drive on the dual carriageway in heavy rain, lots of standing water and they felt very sure footed and stable.

Maybe not the right thread for this - snow chains on front tyres of a AWD car - even though the owners manual says rear only?
Could be due to wheelarch clearance when turning, more than a traction issue? Salted_Peanut said:
The All-Season SF3 tyres have won various awards, so I ll be interested in your real-world experience with them.
Only had one 3 degree morning and the rest pretty mild so far but initial impressions of Autumn conditions is they are brilliant. Ever so slightly louder and firmer than the summer set, the latter perhaps due to a 94 rather than 91 load index. The Lexus isn’t a performance car and I’m not driving on the limit but certainly handing wise so far has been good, definitely don’t feel like a compromise over summers in these temperatures. Only negative really is the lack of any wheel kerbing protection.
Will report back later once winter conditions have been experienced.

Could be due to wheelarch clearance when turning, more than a traction issue? Here's a picture with the chains on the rear. Plenty of space at the front for these chains. I understand that you mean when the wheel is turned, but surely there's more than a few mm clearance there?

Whilst we re on the subject of mixing tyres. I have a full set of Goodyear Vector 4Seasons on the family bus (SMax). The fronts have obviously worn quicker than the rear as I haven t rotated them. They ve been fine but I m toying with the idea of CCs or Vred Ultrac Pros.
I take it I ll be ok to have a different set of all seasons on the front axle to the rear. Not ideal I accept, but should be ok shouldn t it?
Went for the Vred Quatrac Pro+. Measured the Vectors on the rear and they’re at 6.2mm so I’ve left them on the back. I take it I ll be ok to have a different set of all seasons on the front axle to the rear. Not ideal I accept, but should be ok shouldn t it?
Looking forward to seeing how the Vreds perform. Being honest, I kinda stumbled into the choice.
CCs were a bit rich on price (possibly due to time of year? Supply and demand?) , so I struck them off. I actually ordered some Pirelli SF3s from National Tyres @£130 a corner which was a bargain. Funnily enough I got an email the next day saying they couldn’t complete my order…. Funny that.
The Vreds came in at £120 a corner which is a bloody good price. Hoping they measure up well against the outgoing Vectors.
Prices of all season or winter tyres seem to be even more sensitive to size than summer as far as I ve seen. I got the Pirelli SF3s for £92 a corner fitted from National. 225/45r17 being a very popular size.
On the other hand the smaller 195/45r17 on my previous car were over £150 each for Continental TS870!

Thought I d check back in here with a little update.
It s 18 months with the Continental AllSeason Contact 2 s, obviously not a winter but a very good all season - done about 21000 miles, 5.3mm left across the fronts and 5.6mm on the rears. This is on a MK8 Fiesta.
No complaints. Excellent grip still, very quiet, very comfy. Has done remarkably well on some pretty sodden fields over the last few months for various festivals etc. Should manage another 15k ish before swapping out.
