I want alloys but my options are limited so I want the PCD from the peugeot 407. Will 407 wheel hubs replace 406 wheel hubs and will they be a direct swap or will something need work doing? Sorry if any of my questions sound dumb

I'm pretty sure they will, but DON'T DO IT. the 407 wheels have no centre boss to remove. This means the wheels are really hard to balance when they have new tires. So invariably your wheels will wobble. By Citroen wheels instead. There will be loads about.

There aren't loads about as I want them to fill the arches more. Everything in the right PCD is far higher offset meaning even wider wheels will retract into the arch more than the standard ones.

I want to go 4 stud to 5 stud otherwise I would consider it. There are 4 to 5 stud adapters but I don't know if they'd be safe.

If they do fit it'd be quite expensive, new hubs, new discs, probably new calipers, pads and carriers, Try asking on a Peugeot forum someone may have done it.

TBH sounds like a right old faff.
