I'm amazed they didn't get mentioned as an advisory on the MOT.

TBH if it was mine & a keeper, I would change the full lot, but then that is something I do with most cars when I buy them/in the first few months, including wearable suspension joints.

In real terms, they are not too bad & as some have said above will probably clean up at least to some extent, do a few heavy stops & see how they perform being the acid-test.

If they work well for every one of 6 heavy braking manoeuvres without pulling to one side & without getting too hot then you will be OK, jusy keep an eye on them to see how they change/wear.

That was my initial thought but OP said it was a local private sale.

Those brakes are fine, expect to need rear discs as well as pads within a year and the same on the front not long after.

OP those are "fine" and only past it's MOT cry recently with hardly any mikes since.

That said if it's a keeper then I'd change pads and discs all round now /when you have the cash as it's perfectly safe/ then for your ownership you will have the benefit of great brakes and likely when you come to sell it will be a replacement job for the next owner.

Um NZ v Pumas in the Rugby championship - it's never too early to be drinking.

75% worn is fine - just keep driving it. Worth having a look at the other pads as well mind. If they are all like the one in the pic, happy days, and carry on. (And I do this for a living)

Just change the lot when the pads are done, the other noise is probably the heat shield. They can do the job for less, talk to them as you have time before they actually really need doing, the discs are rotten but there are much worse out there, they just reflect low use and/or not hard braking, 3-5k left maybe.

OP, not sure if you've looked at the online MOT history of your car? I'd be surprised if a recent MOT didn't show those issues as "advisories", at least.

https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history

(Not that it helps you much now, of course...)

Do the brakes actually work well? Decent retardation and no pulling to either side? Drive it for a while and there's a good chance the discs will clean up a bit. Rear pads look near to end of life, and I'd certainly be looking to replace all pads and discs before too long.

If it's a keeper I'd be changing them then worry free for years to come.

They are not too bad,

If it were mine I'd drive on them for a little longer, but get them changed early next year.

After doing my usual pre mot checks last week and repainting calipers etc,I looked at pads and decided to renew , 35% off at europarts, compared old too new and barely any difference ,I,m convinced the newer stuff doesn,t have the material on them they used too. And as for £600 ask around for someone who can do basic car mechanics ,buy the parts from Euro parts by ordering online and get job done for a third of the price
