What has caused this? (pics)
Discussion
I took off my handbrake last week and pulled off and the car made a banging noise, similar to when you rip your brake pads off because they're stuck to the rotors (i have done one this on another car). The car had been used everyday and not laid up. The brakes seem fine but every morning when i take the hand brake off the car wont move until i rock it and there is a very low grinding noise the first few times i apply the brake.
i took the car to the garage and the mechanic said that the pads were sticking to the disc rotor and all it needed was some cleaning a lube and its now ok. However when looking at one of my disc rotors, it has the marks shown in the picture, this is only on one disc rotor. do you have any idea what could of caused this? could this just be from moving whilst the brake pads are stuck to the disc rotor? or are the pads worn down?

The scoring was there before I took the car to the garage.
I’m asking what may have caused the scoring? The mechanic said I didn’t need any new parts so the brake pads must be fine and not worn down. Therefore I’m presuming the scoring was caused by the wheel moving when the brake pad was stuck to the disc. I was just hoping to ask people who may have some helpful and knowledgable input.

in damp conditions the pads can (and as you find out do) stick to the disk. The rest of the disk also quickly rusts - and the clearing of this is the low grinding you hear for the first applications.I’m asking what may have caused the scoring? The scoring is caused by a contaminant of some sort - rust, road dirt etc causing localised wearing. its not uncommon and not necessarily directly related to the sticking pads.

As has been implied above your pads have at some point (possibly still there) had a bit of grit or something got stuck in there & that is what has caused the scoring.
It is nothing to worry about as has been said above & by your garage mechanic.
The scraping implies that MAYBE the offending article could still be in the pad material, you can get it out if it is, but nothing to really worry about if it doesn't annoy you.

Hi. I've had a very similar issue in the past. I'm not sure what car it is, but often cars have drum handbrakes that work inside the hat of the disk. These often can corrode themselves on - you say it sounded like a pad ripping off, and I think that is exactly what it is. You need to rock the car to shift the floating pad material and unstick it.
I expect it isn't dangerous, because if it were to lodge when driving, stuff would just smash up and not lock the wheel. But if you do have a drum handbrake setup, I would be taking the disc off to inspect it ASAP.

If there's anything loose inside a drum it IS potentially dangerous!Gassing Station | Suspension, Brakes & Tyres | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
